Does God Still Speak Through Dreams?

Today at Laced With Grace I decided to share a very different kind of devotion. Of late the Lord has sent people to me who have encountered the supernatural. You may remember last month, Judith told her story of an angel encounter at the park. (read it here if you missed it)

This month the Lord sent me a letter. It is a letter about a dream. I have often wondered if the Lord still speaks to people through dreams. I am not one to remember my dreams but on rare occasions something vivid will stick with me into my waking mind.

I have read scripture about Joseph, the Dreamer, in Genesis. Also, there are fantastic accounts of dreams in the book of Daniel and then there is Joseph, who through a dream, was told to flee to Egypt to protect Jesus.

And finally this one: Acts 2:17 “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” (Peter quoting the prophet, Joel.)

My friend, Lauran, sent this letter to me and now I will share it with you. I have known Lauran for almost 30 years. She is a born again Christian and has been a follower of Christ for decades. I remember sitting under her teaching as a young woman in my twenties. She has a heart for Christ like I have never known. I sure want to be like Lauren when I grow up. With this said, I hope her dream encourages you in your faith walk. Our life here on planet earth is just the beginning of a life out of this world.

Lauran: I don’t sleep particularly well, but was snoozing away last night when I awoke from a dream that was so real and wonderful I asked God to help me remember it this morning. Of course, He did.

I was sitting in a folding chair at a long table with paperwork spread out. To my right there was a pretty garden bench with a white-haired lady sitting in the center of it. In front of me there was a tall nice-looking black lady who was about 70. She was wearing a red business suit and I was assisting her in some way. Behind her was a solid garden wall, about waist high. It had flowers trailing over the edge. gardenbench

I turned to my left and was startled to see a man sitting next to me, his folding chair angled toward me. It was my friend Steve! He was wearing blue jeans, a light blue checked shirt and cowboy boots. His smile was soft and closed mouth, but his eyes sparkled with laughter. He looked wonderful – color in his cheeks and no lines on his face.

I exclaimed, “Steve!” Still seated, I gave him a big hug and he returned it warmly. He felt solid, there, and for an instant I thought, ‘he’s back!” But of course my heart knew that was not really possible.

I asked, “Steve, is heaven just wonderful?” His smile faded slightly and he looked away as if picturing the heaven he now lived in. He turned back with a huge grin on his face and said, “It IS wonderful!” He indicated it was a very beautiful place with lots of activity. Then he said something about, “Jesus, every day.”

He looked down at the little boy in his lap, whom I had not seen earlier. He appeared to be about two years old, dressed in a brightly colored t-shirt, overalls and sneakers. Looking at the boy, Steve said, “We are out a lot.”

I told Steve I have always wondered how God works it out having souls from so many centuries, cultures, languages and earthly-ages living and communicating together in heaven. I especially wondered about those who died as adults communicating with those who died as babies. “I know you are not in your earthly body in heaven,” I said. “No,” Steve said, “but we recognize one another’s essence.” I seemed to sense that he was saying that everyone was on an equal plane and while he didn’t use the word aura, I also sensed he was referring to all heavenly souls being bodies of light.

At that moment, I remembered the lady I was helping. I turned back to her and said, “I’ll be right back to finish helping you.” She smiled indulgently and walked over to the garden bench. She sat down on the left side of the white-haired lady, whom I then recognized as my dear friend Harriet.

I wondered if the lady had observed me talking to and hugging an empty chair and thought I was nuts. I turned back to Steve. “Does that lady see you and the boy?” Steve didn’t answer but set the little boy down off his lap. I could see that he had a piece of candy held tightly in his chubby little hand. He ran to the garden bench and stopped in front of the lady in the red suit. He handed her the candy. But instantly the lady was gone and a little girl stood next to the boy accepting the candy. She had on black patent shoes and white socks with lace. Her dress was red, with a full skirt and ruffles. She and the little boy chattered back and forth, but I could not understand them. Then the little boy turned to his left and ran down the walkway. The little girl ran laughing behind him and they both disappeared behind the garden wall.

I walked over to the garden bench and sat in the place where the woman had been. Harriet took my hand and smiled at me. Then we saw Steve standing on the other side of the garden wall, looking at us. The woman in the red suit walked back up the walkway and sat down on the other side of Harriet. She took Harriet’s hand and then placed her other hand over it.

Steve’s face had moved up into the air and there were dark clouds behind him. He said, “Some people say I left too soon, but actually I left pretty close to the end. The End is very near.” Then he disappeared.

The three of us sat on the garden bench, holding hands and looking at the place in the sky where’s Steve face had been.

I cannot interpret this dream for you. I recognize some of its parts as being biblically founded, but not all.

Many of you knew Steve. Seven years ago this week he died at the age of 47 of respiratory failure, paralyzed by Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Steve was a Christian and I always think of his spirit as alive and well in the presence of God.

I simply want to leave you with Steve’s final comment in my dream: the End is very near. Of course, for all of us living today as adults, the end of our personal earthly life is indeed quite near. I am praying for all of those whom I love to accept Jesus as their redeemer and savior before that final day comes for each of us. Eternity WITHOUT salvation through Jesus will be awful; eternal life WITH God and his Christ will be, in Steve’s words, wonderful.

Lynn: I pray this dream encourages you and perhaps urges you to pray with more fervor for those who are unsaved. The end is very near. Have a blessed and beautiful day. May Jesus make all your dreams come true. Lynn

I think God can use any means, including dreams. I heard a missionary speak who said that many people in the Middle East were having dreams about Jesus. I know I had a vivid dream about 20 years ago before I was walking closely with the Lord. But I do think we need to be cautious in our interpretation of our dreams. Thanks for sharing your friend’s dream, Lynn. And even though we don’t know the exact time of our Lord’s return, I want to be ready and eagerly anticipating that day. It does create an urgency as I pray for loved ones who don’t know Jesus as their Savior yet.

Oh that we all had the ears to hear and the eyes to see. Then we would all be ready, for the end is truly near.

Powerful testimony! Thank you Lynn for sharing this with us.

    HI Debbie,

Thank you for stopping in. You know I just read one of the best books ever about a Muslim woman who had dreams. Very powerful. I also agree, we must be cautious about them but sometimes they can so encourage a person in faith.

God bless you my friend for sharing this beautiful dream. I believe God chooses anyway He can to talk to us. We all need to wake up, and listen. We have got to pray without ceasing for all those that are lost without Him.

Thank you for your courage in posting this letter.

YES! I do believe God uses dreams to communicate with us. He wants to talk to and with us. He longs to be in relationship with us…and what joy it is when we hear him!!!!!

I posted a link to a dream I had last Sept. on Lynn’s main blog, and she asked me to post it here, so here it is. You can also view it at:

So, after starting this new Beth Moore study, I had a dream last night, and I believe an encounter with God that left me trembling and still has me shaking a little bit. I have not interpreted it yet, so if you are gifted with interpretation, I would like to hear your interpretation.

    Here’s the dream:

I and some of my family members were on a mountain top along with other people who were left to fend for their lives. It sorta seemed to me to be the end of time last days type of thing. It was stormy, very windy, as if a tornado would continually come and go, and each of us would take refuge and try to hide from the winds when they were about to get stronger. People were dying. At the onset of another storm, my family members and I were trying to take refuge, when I looked up and to the east I saw a lion, and I said, “Look! The LION of Judah!” I was very happy and excited to see Him for I felt salvation was at hand. He in turn made His way directly in front of me and roared with a very loud roaring voice spoken to me, “I have known you since the foundation of the earth.” And then I woke up.

Upon awaking, several things went through my mind: 1) I had just been with the Lord and felt His radiant presence, 2) were the trumpets about to sound and the redeemed called to heaven?, 3) unclean like Isaiah, but also clean by the blood of Christ (both at once), 4) fear, 5) praises on my tongue “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty!”

Now even though I was awestruck and a little terrified, I was also peaceful in that I was able to go back to sleep with a radiant light ever before me.

So today I’ve realized that I know little about “the lion of Judah.” Do you? The verses that spoke to me are these:

“For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a great lion to Judah. I will tear them to pieces and go away; I will carry them off, with no one to rescue them. Then I will go back to my place until they admit their guilt. And they will seek my face; in their misery they will earnestly seek me.” Hosea 5:14-15

“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I lifted the yoke from their neck and bent down to feed them. … How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim. For I am God, and not man — the Holy One among you. I will not come in wrath. They will follow the Lord; he will roar like a lion. when he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, like doves from Assyria. I will settle them in their homes, declares the Lord.” Hosea 11:1-4, 8-11.

I cannot wait to get into my study tonight to see how God speaks.

This was interesting Lynn. I do believe God can speak to us through dreams (although most of them are not supernatural.) Thanks for reminding me to pay attention to any dreams or visions God might be sending my way. Have a blessed weekend. Hugs!
