Being Content Because of His Love

“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” ~ Philippians 4:11-13 (ESV)

Have you ever seen the movie “Giant”? If not, here is a short description: Texas, ranch, oil, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, 1956 blockbuster, rich, poor, competition, sad…

Why do I bring up this movie? As I was thinking about one of the main characters (Jett Rink played by James Dean), I was reminded that richness in a worldly sense is not always a good thing. You see Rink was a poor man living at the edge of a very large ranch. He envied Jordan ‘Bick’ Benedict (Rock Hudson). Rink felt that if he would be as rich as Benedict, he would be happy. The sad thing: after he got rich because of oil, his head got too big. Instead of being happy, he was lonely.

It took me a long time to understand and take to heart the above Scripture passages. We (Christians) too often think that money would solve all our problems. Sure it is comforting to have a little extra money in the bank; but it still does not buy happiness.

As I look back at my life (and become wiser), worldly richness does not make me happy. Although I am not rich, I am content with what I do have. A husband who loves me, a son who respects me, health, a roof over my head, food on the table. Sure we had lean years, but we never had to go hungry. Was I always content? No, I wanted more. Just like Paul I had to learn the secret: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me”…

Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank You for Your incredible love for me. Lord, thank You for teaching me the secret on how to be content. Thank You for given me strength through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for your provision over the years. Lord, help me to never be discontent again. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Yes! I can LEARN to be content. Problem is most people use the wrong measuring stick for what the definition of “content” is. I am so glad that I can rest assured that my peace and contentment is found in the Lord! Great Word!
