Blessings

We have just experienced a season of Thanksgiving. In our family, after the meal we each share the blessings for which we are thankful. Although material blessings are sometimes mentioned, often the most heartfelt blessings are those of family, friends, and faith. We recognize that God is the source of all blessing. The scriptures are filled with God’s promise of blessing. Although we are undeserving, it is apparent that God enjoys blessing his children. Some blessings are conditional, but the conditions are always given to direct us in ways that will benefit us and result in blessing.

In Matthew 5: 3-11 we read the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus taught about those who are blessed. The Beatitudes are a part of that sermon and as you read this passage, it becomes clear that the character of Jesus is described. He is humble, our comforter, and righteous. He is merciful, pure and a peacemaker. He was persecuted, yet taught that because of our obedience we are blessed.

But God’s blessings can flow through us as well as to us. God’s blessings are given to us so that we may in turn bless others.

As I continue to go through my mother’s things, I find treasures that I want to share. My mother suffered from dementia. It came on gradually – so much so that I did not realize until after her death just how long it had been overtaking her thoughts and actions. I recently found a little piece of newspaper she had saved that I wish I had seen earlier. Perhaps those who read this message will benefit if you have older parents or friends.

Beatitudes for Friends of the Aged

Blessed are they who understand my faltering step and palsied hand.

Blessed are they who seem to know that my eyes are dim and my wits are slow.

Blessed are they who know that my ears today

must strain to catch the things they say.

Blessed are they who looked away when coffee spilled at the table today.

Blessed are they with a cheery smile who stop to chat for a little while.

Blessed are thy who never say, “You’ve told that story twice today.”

Blessed are they who know the ways to bring back memories of yesterdays.

Blessed are they who make it known that I’m loved, respected, and not alone.

Blessed are they who know I’m at a loss to find the strength to carry the Cross.

Blessed are they who ease the days on my journey Home, in loving ways.

As I read this, I think of a special lady who visited my mother monthly for years, always listening to her stories and bringing her cookies and flowers. I remember the kind caregivers who became like family and treated her with loving care. I praise God for those who became a blessing to my mother.

God is the source of all blessing. He spoke a special blessing and instructed Moses to relay it to his people as they traveled through the wilderness. I believe God is speaking this to us today.

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.  Numbers 6:24-26

May the Lord continually bless you with heaven’s blessings as well as with human joys. Psalm 128:5 TLB

Thank you for sharing this. My sister is currently dealing with the devastating and rapidly progressing signs of Parkinsons and dementia with her husband. Every day is a challenge for her in learning to cope and adjust to these ever increasing changes. But, this is also applicable to all of us as we simply strive to live together in harmony as we age. Thank you.

It is hard to see beloved family and friends age, and forget things. I love the article you have found in your mother’s belongings.
