Constantly Watching

My son has been leading a couple of songs on some Sunday evenings at the church we attend.   This week one of his choices was a song called “I Am a Sheep” by Dennis Jernigan. You can read the lyrics here.  I was reminded of a time when he was younger that he did not like for me to sing this song to him at bedtime. He would tell me, “Don’t sing the song about the lion coming.”

Now here is my boy leading this same song. I think about the words as I sing and am reminded how in all situations God is there, watching over us.

“When the winds blow, He is my shelter!”
Have you ever been in a wind storm? The power of the wind is amazing if you think about it. It’s weird to me to notice some days that are so calm and others that have constant wind all day long. Sometimes we have very strong gusts here, and last week we had one of those days. As I picked my boy up from school, I could feel the force of the wing pushing against the car. Then when the children came out, it looked like my boy was nearly blowing over to the car door. We laughed about it as he quickly slammed the door shut. He wanted to be in the safety of the car!

It is the same way in life. Life gets so crazy and busy sometimes that it feels we are in a windstorm. We feel like we are being pushed along and just want everything to slow down for a minute of rest. In those times, go find the safety and shelter of the Shepherd. When life is blowing around us, our shelter is in the Lord. We are safe with Him. Psalm 27:5 David writes: “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.”

“When I’m lost and alone, He rescues me!”
It is a terrible feeling to be lost. Have you ever lost your family while in a big shopping mall? Or maybe your child got separated from you for a brief time? There is such relief when you are reunited. You want to hold onto that hand and be reassured again and again everything is okay.

We all seem to get off the path from time to time. We end up wandering around trying to find our way back to the path where we should be. When that is the case, know that you have one who is ready and willing to rescue you. You aren’t alone when you are with Him. Another verse of David’s in Psalm 31:2: “Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.”

When the lion comes, He is my victory!”
Lions are beautiful creatures, but I definitely would not want to see one loose chasing after me. Their massive paws, sharp teeth and loud roar would be enough to cause fear in any heart.

Our enemy the devil is compared to a lion prowling (I Peter 5:8). He is on the lookout, ready to pounce on the unsuspecting. As Christians we need to realize that we are up against a lion, the devil. BUT we cannot forget that we have victory through our Savior! He IS the victory for each of us, no matter what the devil tries to throw our way or what attacks may come.

“Constantly watching over me!”
It doesn’t matter where you go, the Shepherd is always there watching. In the beautiful passage of Psalm 139, we see that we cannot go anywhere that He does not see us. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” (Psalm 139:7-10)

May you be comforted and encouraged today to know your Shepherd is watching over you, little sheep, no matter what you are going through.

Have a day of blessings!
