What are you wearing this summer?

Last Thursday was our last day of school.  The bright sun has been giving us days with temperatures in the 90s and some 100s. I’ve also noticed how the days are getting longer.  It definitely feels like summer is here!

Each year when the coldness outside is replaced with warmth I always notice how women start wearing less clothing. Gone are the sweaters, scarves, and boots. Out come the tank tops, shorts, and flip flops. Many today do not care about dressing modestly or think anything about what they’re wearing.  Some of the things I see just shock me!  As a Christian, I think it is important to be careful with our clothing choices. You can still look fashionable and cute and be modest at the same time!

More important than the garments you choose each day, as a Christ follower you are to be clothed with certain virtues.   There are many verses that tell us how we are to clothe ourselves.

“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”  Romans 13:13, 14

“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:26, 27

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”  Colossians 3:12

“In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ ”  I Peter 5:5

When you put on a shirt or pair of shorts, it is something others will see when they look at you.  These physical clothes speak about you and your preferences and style. They are a representation of you.  In the same way you put on a shirt for others to see, you need to consider if you are spiritually clothing ourselves with the things that you should….Are you being compassionate to your children?  Are you kind to the office coworkers?  Do you offer a gentle answer to your husband when he calls to say he’s running late?  Do you show patience to the elderly man walking down the aisle at the grocery store?  Make a decision daily to put on these Christ-like characteristics.

As you get out your favorite shorts and flip flops to wear this summer, I encourage you to make modest choices.   Wherever you go, people are looking at you and how you are living.  Do the clothes they see (both your physical clothing and spiritual clothes) match your statement that you are a Christian?

Have a day of blessings!

Great words of wisdom, Bethany. I agree, I am sometimes shocked what I see people are wearing.
I love that you have said about clothing ourselves with humility, compassion and other traits we should wear while out and about. May I always reflect Him in what I do, say and wear.
