Do you know His Voice?

Whenever my phone rings, I distinctly recognize the voice on the other end. Besides caller ID, the sound of a recognizable voice tells me if it’s friend, family or unknown. I recognize it because I either know it or I don’t.

The Voice of God is the same. We can’t answer a call from Someone that we don’t know.

I recently attended a women’s conference where I first learned about the story of Jennifer Barrick. If you don’t know who Jennifer is, she along with her brother and parents were in a horrific car accident when they were hit by a drunk driver. The accident left everyone pretty banged up but Jennifer, just a sophomore in high school, was banged up the worst.

After 5 weeks in a coma, Jennifer (Jen) began to wake up but she experienced severe brain damage and could not respond or communicate with her family or doctors. However, there was one person she could communicate with as clear as day…God!

The book that her mother, Linda wrote called “Miracle for Jen” outlines how her young daughter could not respond to them but she would recite Bible Scriptures from memory and pray beautiful prayers to God with every word spoken perfectly.

The story of Jennifer Barrick has not only touched me deeply but has spurred a question deep down in my soul, “In the face of tragedy, what Voice will I hear?”

No doubt the family and friends of Jennifer Barrick asked God where He was in this terrible tragedy, but all along, Jennifer who could not form a word or remember what a pancake was, knew exactly where God was. He was with her all the way and when nothing around her was recognizable, the Voice of God was.

God’s Voice isn’t always loud, sometimes it is a soft whisper. I can only imagine, in those confusing times in Jen’s brain, the sound of the whispers of God’s Voice brought her calm and peace. If everything in my world gets confusing and goes dark, I want to be like Jennifer Barrick and recognize the Voice of God.

Before I can recognize His Voice though, I have to know His Voice. Listen to the soft whispers of God, He is calling out to you and offering you peace even in the midst of tragedy and confusion.

(Psalm 46:10) “Be still and know that I am God”.

Wow, I have never heard about Jen’s story. Very unique. My hope is that I will always hear his voice…in good and in bad times.
