My body is God’s temple

13 Oct

1Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

God’s been really talking to me lately about how healthy my body is. After a recent incident with my little dog I’ve had to change the times I take her out walking. I use to walk her and my children to school but now I rise earlier than anyone else and find that the crisp cool morning air is just a good a time as any. The best thing about it is that I can use the quiet time to pray and both her and I get the exercise we need.

BUT exercise isn’t enough in my book. Here are a few points that I’m going to be doing to get healthier:

  • In the next couple of weeks my dh and I are going to be building a compost bin and a vegetable garden for our family.
  • We’re also going to clean out our small patio garden and plant some fresh herbs.
  • Drinking lots of water instead of soda and coffee definitely helps too.
  • Socially we have a mixed variety of friends, some of them are Christians and some aren’t. The ones who aren’t like to drink to excess on different nights of the week whereas we don’t. Why don’t we drink too? The main reason is like the verse above says, why would we want to pollute our temples with things like alcohol and junk food?

The moral of this is that if we look after the bodies that God gave us then they’ll definitely last alot longer plus we’ll feel better for it too.

So many Christians, I think, overlook this area. The Lord has been dealing with me on this issue also. Thank for the reminder.

    Dear Amy,
Thank you for the reminder that “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” as I agree we, fallowers of Christ, tend to forget that with everytihng else we are trying to do.
I would like to make a little side note though. I know you said the point of your note was to remember that our body is God’s temple and I agree (why argue with scripture? *smile*). I would like to make mention of the drinking topic though. One thing to note that any thing in excess is generally not good for ones body. Titus 2:3 “the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much sine, teachers of good things”. So, to have a glass of wine is not bad for our body, but we are not to be given to MUCH wine. *smile* I was in search of a specific verse when this other one was brough to mind and it fits perfectly with your topic. *smile* 1Corinthians 10:31 “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Perfectly put, do all for the glory of God not just one thing or another, but all things. *smile* I think that will do for today.

Your botton is on my blog so I check you entries as often as the others on there, which is every day. *smile*

Blessings, -me- (Mommy of two little blessings)

    Amy,

Excellent post. Thank you. I think we tend to ignor how important our physical bodies are to God.

So true. When you are in your fifties like me you really start to think…I need to take care of this temple if I want it to last longer. I have lost 4o pounds in the last year and feel soooo much better. I eat healthy and walk everyday and drink lots of water. It is so worth it.

Since we have been really into photography, we exercise a lot – walking :) – I have given up pop, because it was not good for my body – I substituted it with water – much better :)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on 1 Corinthians…
