Legacy

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful vacation visiting my cousins in the Seattle area. After traveling by plane, train, automobile and ferry, we arrived in Seattle, Port Townsend, Whidbey Island and Auburn. What a treat to spend time with cousins on both sides of my family. On my dad’s side most of my cousins, and my siblings, have inherited a form of muscular dystrophy. It is late onset, and affects first the legs and then the arms, causing weakness and eventually an inability to walk.

As we visited our various cousins, and saw their varying levels of disability, I thought about legacy. What have our parents left to us? What kind of examples did they set? We all have a physical legacy due to the DNA we inherited from our parents. But we also have a spiritual legacy. What did our parents leave us, and more importantly, what spiritual legacy are we leaving to our own children? Have we both modeled and taught what it means to be a follower of Jesus? Even as I write this I know I could have done more to

“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Even when our legs cannot carry us on literally on a straight path, are we walking spiritually on a straight path and leaving a spiritual legacy to our children? I pray that I am, and for all of you reading this, I pray you are too.
