My Portion

7 Jul

I had dozed off in the cabin while grandma played with the kids outside.  My afternoon nap came to an abrupt halt the second I heard her words, “Cody fell off the dock.”  I shot up off the couch to see my little guy standing in front of me, covered in weeds, missing his shoes, but fully intact.

A deep breath later, I heard the story about how a little curious boy was searching through the muck of the bay while grandma watched from a few feet away.  All it took was one second for him to tumble head over heels into the deep and thick water.  He kept his head above water, but knew that he was in trouble.  Thankfully grandma saw him laboring to keep his head above water, and her arms lifted him out of the mire in mere seconds.

I didn’t let my mind go down the past of “What if…”, but I did breathe a prayer of thanks.  What a reminder to me – that life is fleeting and that I have no guarantee of what happens next.

As I praised God for life; the life of THIS day, the life He gave me, I read Psalm 16.

Psalm 16: 5 – 11

Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,

because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

My heart rejoices because God knows when life begins and when it ends and He knows my portion and my cup.  I find peace and hope in knowing that He has a plan and my life is in His hands.

Beautiful post. Oh I have a real problem with dwelling on the what ifs. I always say I could probably handle just about anything but losing one of my kids or my husband. There have been so many close calls and I’ll do the what if and I just sit there and thank the Lord that the what if didn’t come to pass!
    Blessings,
    Kim

Oh those terrible ‘what ifs’ can creep in so swiftly. Thank you for this reminder my life is in His hands and He will be there each step of the way.

    Blessings.

Praise God for the peace He gives to our hearts as we go through life on earth.

Psalm 16 is such a good reminder in these overwhelming days in which we live. It seems that the news gets worse every day – but our God is with us and will never leave us – praise the Lord!

I am so glad grandma was standing by!
