Mother’s Day – Can Be a Mixed Blessing

Mother’s Day is always a mixed blessing for me. You may wonder why I would say a mixed blessing. Don’t get me wrong – I love my mother; I adore – love my daughter; I cherish – love my grandson! I am so thankful I still have them – especially my 93 year old mother – in my life. Yes, that’s correct she is 93! But there are some of us who spend Mother’s Day with a cloud of sorrow over our hearts. There are many of you whose mothers are no longer with them; there are some who have lost a child (whether through miscarriage or sometime later in life); there are some who have prodigals who they do not even know where their children are at this time.

Yes, it can be a bittersweet “holiday” for many. We want to celebrate with our loved ones who are present, yet our heart aches for those who have gone on before. I know personally the pain of losing a child (through miscarriage) – on Mother’s Day weekend at that! So on Mother’s day I celebrate the lives of my loved ones here on earth as well as the precious life of my child and grandchildren awaiting me in heaven.

So I challenge you this week, if you know of someone who has a child or mother in heaven, send them a special note of encouragement this week. Let them know you are praying for them as you know this is an especially difficult week for them. Let them know it is okay to cry for their loved one gone on before and then to rejoice in the loved ones they have presently with them. And send a special note of encouragement to those women whose womb and heart aches because they never had a child of their own. Let them know how special they have been in your life. Let them know that they too have had a special place in your upbringing or a special “spiritual” mother in your life.

In short – be a blessing to someone today – and every day! Love and cherish your mother, children, grandchildren….. Tell today and every day that you love them! Love them while can! (get out the tissues!)

“But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:48-50

So many who hurt because of their loss. May we be sensitive to those who need an extra hug. Mother’s Day is not the same for me since I lost my Mom. Miss calling her and buying a card.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. This year is the first year I will not talk to my mom on Mother’s Day. Miss her greatly.
