My Witness

Rom 1:9-10

9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

NIV

My whole life it has been drilled in my head- be a witness for God!  It is our duty to tell the gospel to the nations.  As Christians, we must live a Godly testimony before our family and community.  That is absolutely true!  But as I was studying this passage for my Sunday School class, the words just leapt off the page!  Paul said that God is his witness. His witness.  God was a witness how constantly Paul remembered the Romans in his prayers.  God was a witness of his desire to visit the Romans.

Let’s face it.  God is our witness all the time.  We may be sporadic in our witnessing, but His eyes and ears are always open to witness our conduct and thoughts.  The good, the bad, the ugly.  Our intentions, our thoughts, our actions, none of it, is beyond the scope of His witnessing.

It amazes me how confidant Paul was in the presence of God to say- “God is my witness how constantly I remember you in my prayers at all times.”  Because his conscience was clear, it was a good thing for God to witness.  And without fear, Paul could acknowledge this relationship.  This accountability.

Sometimes, in my job as a social worker, I am careful to bring in a witness when I am covering issues regarding health, safety or risk.  It is just good to be covered- to have peace of mind that someone else can verify that I have done my job. Conversely, there have been times that I have dropped the ball in an area- and there are witnesses for that as well!  In those moments, the extra witnesses was more of an unhappy coincidence than a help!

If we could just approach all of life with an understanding that God is always our witness, it would enable us to excel more in godliness and in living above reproach.  He is our constant companion.  Our constant comfort. Our constant teacher.  And yes!  Our constant witness.  If that gives you pause, join me in praying!

Dear Lord, please help me to live mindful of your watchful eye.  Please help me to bring you glory and not shame.  Enable me to live my life with a clear conscience.  Grant me the grace to glorify you in all that I say and do.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
