Who should you remember today?

Loss is part of life for all of us. We went through a miscarriage in April this year. The support we received from family, friends, and our church family at that time was so uplifting. It helped so much to have so much loving support. This was actually our second miscarriage. I remember the ways people reached out to us then too and how they helped us through our initial days of grief.

Something I have noticed lately is how nice it feels for someone to remember our loss. I remember every single day that I’m no longer pregnant; that fact hasn’t gone away for me. On the days that someone asks how I’m doing, it lifts me up and encourages my heart to know that someone has remembered that my heart is still hurting as it continues through the healing process.

Grief is a journey. While there are certain stages anyone experiencing grief goes through, each situation is unique. I think it is important to come alongside those who are grieving and offer your support. They may not want to talk, but it will mean so much that you remembered that they are still hurting months or years after their loss.

I know it is hard to know what to say to someone or you may be afraid you will say the wrong thing.  However, a simple “thinking of you today” will make someone’s day. It will let them know that they are not forgotten and that you remember their loved one.

Take a minute to think about the people you know who’ve experienced a loss in the past year.  Find a way to offer them encouragement. Maybe give them a call or send a text or email. Another idea is to send a card in the mail. Simply let them know you care and are thinking of them. Offer a listening ear. Include an encouraging verse from the Bible like these:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5, 6

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.” Psalm 40:1

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” I Peter 5:7

“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’“ Lamentations 3:22-24

Remember someone today in your life who is hurting after a loss, whether that loss was last week, 6 months ago, or 5 years ago.  Be a blessing in their day and show them they are not forgotten!
