Which Road?

Bernadine has been affected by the storm Sandy and is without internet service, so we are posting an oldie but goodie. This post originally from April 23, 2010 will surely bless you again.

Have  you ever read the poem The Road Less Traveled?  It is about a man who went on a journey. During his journey he came upon crossroads. He decided to take the one that not many people had traveled before him. At the end of his journey looking back he said that taking the road less traveled had made all the difference in his life.

I was reading the poem recently and for some reason I thought about Abraham and Isaac.

What is the road less traveled? In my opinion, the road less traveled is the road with the tough choices. It’s one that not many people voluntarily choose to go down. It’s the one Abraham chose. Isaac was Abraham’s promised son but Isaac was what God asked of him. In verse one and two of Genesis 22 it says

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am. Then he said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, who you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

Many times in life we will be asked to do things that may seem totally unfair. But, God wants us to have faith in him and make the right choice even when it’s hard.  Isaac was the son that God had promised Abraham and now here it was that God was asking him to do the hardest thing for any parent to do, give up his child. I’m sure that Abraham did not understand why God wanted him to give up his precious son. However he trusted God; he realized that God had a plan, which he would reveal in his time.

10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”  “Here I am,” he replied.  12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Genesis 22:10-12

The choices God asks us to make are often times hard but it’s only a test. Unfortunately, many times we don’t realize that we are being tested and we end up making wrong choices that affects our future. When we choose to go our own way or take the easy way and do our own thing we deprive ourselves of what God has planned for us. If Abraham had chosen not to give Isaac God would still have loved him but he would have realized that Abraham lacked faith in him and Abraham would not have experienced God in his fullness. He would not have the testimony that God always provides.

13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” Gen 22:13

Are you at a crossroad? What tough choices are you facing today? Which road are you going to take?

God bless,

Bernadine

I’ve never really understood the poem “The Road Less Traveled” but as you can see that didn’t stop me from putting my interpretation on it.:)

I’m definitely at that crossroads right now. Many things have changed in my life in the last couple of months since my husband has gone home to God. I am left with more choices and more responsibilities than I’ve ever had. I just keep praying that God will direct me to HIS path for me.

You are too cute, Bernadine about your statement about the poem (I have never read it)…
You are right, we usually chose the easy way out – I do. Or I try to run away from a hard decision that needs to be made…
That you for the reminder to trust God all the way, even if it means to take the road less traveled.

Bernadine, I love this! And I think your take on the poem is perfect. That road less traveled is hard, but it brings the greatest peace and satisfaction.

    Blessings.

I am starting to really enjoy the road less traveled. Once I learned to fully embrace faith, the road became easier and exciting!

Here’s to a path alone with God!
