Thankful in Job Moments

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

“What’s the use? Why am I doing this? I am useless…”

All these thoughts crowded my mind the other morning as I was getting ready for work. You can say I had a pity-party or as I call those moments, Job moments. I was struggling to find anything good that morning. My mind was only focusing on the bad.

Thankfully that day I had my monthly lunch with my best friend. I am glad that God placed her in my life. Even though we do no longer work together, we still meet up. The time with her made me realize how much I am truly blessed.

In yesterday’s devotion, I read this and took it to heart:

“When your mind is occupied with thanking Me, you have no time for worrying or complaining. If you practice thankfulness consistently, negative though patterns will gradually grow weaker and weaker.” Sarah Young – Jesus Calling

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul urges us to ‘rejoice always, pray without ceasing…’ But what does that look like? Rejoice always, pray without ceasing? If I keep my mind off the negative things, but are in communion with God throughout the day, my mind does not have the time to get off track.

Yes, we can give thanks in all circumstances to keep us focused. It does not mean that we give thanks for the circumstances, but in them. There is a huge difference.

For instance, as I was shopping for Thanksgiving, I started to grow weary. Long lines at the checkout. People impatient…but as soon as I started to complain in my heart, I refocused quickly. I thanked God that I have the money to go shopping. Thanked Him that I have a car that takes me to places. Thanked God for His love, grace and mercy.

Yes, I may have those Job moments, but with His help I can be thankful in all circumstances.

Lord of mercy and grace. Help me to set my heart and mind on being thankful in every circumstance. You are good and Your Spirit lives within me. May I never forget the goodness of You love. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen”.

By the way; my friend and I made a deal. We will text each other at least one thing we are thankful for, daily.

Happy Thanksgiving!
