What Are You Passing Down?

When I was growing up, going to church on Sundays was not an option for me. It was as expected as a daily shower. It didn’t matter if I was sick, or whose birthday it was or how much homework I had – if I wasn’t in the hospital, I was in church!

I can remember as a small child, my mother bringing a blanket and when the Holy Spirit moved in the service past my bedtime, she laid me under the pew.

I am almost certain that because of the faith that was grounded in me at such a young age, I can say that God is at the top of my priority list. Not everyone can say that, even though the Bible clearly instructs us that we are to love God ABOVE anything (or anyone) else…

(Luke 10:27a) “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.”

Loving God first is not only a command but it is also a choice. Unfortunately, in today’s generation, I see God being chosen 2nd, 3rd and sometimes last. Attending church on Sunday or giving back to God a small portion of what He has blessed us with just isn’t top priority anymore. We give in the offering AFTER the bills are paid and vacation is paid for. We attend church IF there are no sports to play, football games to watch, birthday parties to attend or laundry to catch up on.

The choices that we make today for God are living examples for those watching us to follow. If God comes 2nd to other things in our life, there is no doubt that what we are passing down is the ideal that God doesn’t take priority.

I take vacation just like you, that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about not loving God with all that you have, not making Him more important than the other “things” in your life. No football player died for me and my dirty laundry didn’t hang on a cross. Jesus did and for that, I want to give Him my best and make Him my best!

Think about your commitments, do they include God? What is it that you are passing down – self or sacrifice? I pray today that God becomes number one in all that we do, not just on Sundays but 7 days a week!

BLESSINGS, LAURIE

Powerful message, Laurie. You are right; we need to put God first. I have not done that all the time. Thank you for the reminder.
