The Winning Team

A couple weeks ago, my family and I attended a football banquet in honor of my son’s high school football team. We enjoyed a catered turkey dinner. Yes, another turkey dinner. We applauded as each player was recognized by a coach. Awards were handed out. Then the senior players took turns thanking the coaches. My son Justin was picked to honor the head coach. And as always he had the whole place laughing. At the end of the night we watched a tribute movie of the season. What a great night. Go Titans!

The next morning I was still thinking about the Titans. Every player mattered. All were recognized. No player was left behind. Not even the injured ones. This team defeated the best team in our league in an upset, ending their season with a 7-3 record. They stuck together and gave it their all. They are real winners.

Which leads me to consider you and me as God’s team. I’m thinking about our wins and losses. Life is hard. And sometimes the score doesn’t look good. We want to quit. We get knocked down, maybe even injured. We wonder how life will end.

Will we go down in defeat?

Especially during the Christmas season we can feel the weight of our losses.

Well I have good news for you.

God isn’t finished with you yet.

We will win in the end. It will be us, not our rival, who will claim the victory. Because of what Christ has done. So let’s stick together and give it our all.

I find such comfort in the truth’s Word about victory.

For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4

With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. Psalm 60:12

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58

Mind if I pray?

Almighty God, we thank You that we are on Your side. No weapon formed against us will prosper. We thank You for our unique, contributing position on Your team. As our Coach, thank You for teaching us how to live and love strategically. Help us trust You when the odds are stacked against us and when we are knocking down. Help us remember whose we are in the end: Yours. On Your winning team. Forever we stand with You in victory. All trophies belong to You. We praise You, our Coach and King. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
