The Sign of the Cross
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 – ESV (emphasis mine)
Do you make the sign of the cross? Do you wear a cross? I actually do both…
So, why do I wear a cross? It is not a fashion statement! I don’t wear much jewelry. The cross necklace and my wedding band is all I wear. Wearing the cross is a daily reminder to Whom I belong to. It also shows others what I believe (and my hope is that my actions reflect what I believe).
As Paul states in the letter to the Corinthian church, the cross is folly to those who are perishing. When people see my cross necklace, they may feel uncomfortable. I hope that I have the opportunity to explain to those who are uncomfortable, what the cross means to me. It is the power of God and the grace He gave us by giving up His son do die for my (our) sins.
My dear friends; you may not wear a cross or make the sign of the cross. However, let your actions and your words be seasoned with grace that comes from God.
“Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank You for sending Your son to die for my (our) sins. May my actions and words be always seasoned with grace. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen”
