Set Free

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” ~ John 8:31-33 (ESV)

This weekend is a big celebration here in the United States of America. 4th of July or Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, and historical celebrations. As an ‘outsider’ living in this country, I did a little research on the Internet about this special day. I found something really interesting penned by John Adams in 1776 to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Did you see what he wrote? “…by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” Sadly America is heading down the same road as my home-country Germany: God is forgotten in every day life. No more prayers in schools because we can not offend anyone. Do not use the name of Jesus openly in the work-place, you might get written up. Do not be too courteous, people might thing you are weak…

God has truly blessed this country with wealth, schools, hospitals, universities. You think that God did not had His hands in the richness of this country? Check on some history of schools, hospitals etc. Most of them (if not all) where founded by Christians; God was in the center teaching and healing.

So, when you watch some fireworks this year, thank God that you live in a free country and that Jesus Christ has set you free indeed.

Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank You for setting us free indeed. We know that not all roads lead to heaven. Lord, help us to be a good witness to Your goodness, mercy, and grace. May we point to You by the way we live our lives. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Thanks for the reminder of what (and Who) this country was founded on! Let us always remember the blessings God has showered on this nation and never take them for granted. Happy 4th of July to you!

    Living for Him, Joan
