The Promise Land

Every year I set the goal to read the Bible from cover to cover. January begins in Genesis and December ends with the final words of Revelation. What never ceases to amaze me is how each time I read it, I learn so many new things!

So, I’m right near the end of Leviticus, reading all the rules and regulations the Israelites needed to follow and that this was part of their preparation for the Promised Land. The Israelites had so much to overcome, just like we do. Challenges and trials were a significant part of their lives, just as they are for us today.

What struck me this read through is that even when the Israelites reached the Promised Land, their lives were still challenging. God didn’t just bring them to this place and let them populate it without any struggle. First they had to fight for their place, then work to keep it. Even in the midst of the promise they’d waited years to attain, they still had work to do, things to learn, and issues to overcome.

Does this sound familiar? Some of us come to know Christ early in life, some of us later. Our salvation is like our Promise Land. It’s a place of God’s promises but we still have work to do. We’re still learning what it means to be God’s children and what He expects from us.

Maybe it sounds crazy but this really brought me comfort. I used to think the Israelites had missed out on so much. And maybe they did, but then I realize I’m an Israelite too. God’s brought me out of the desert in many ways to a land of promise, but I know there’s still some sand to be dislodged from my shoes.

I’m still on the journey and, thankfully, God is patient. He’s the one in control of our time schedule so when I grow impatient I remind myself who’s really in control and that my true and final “Promised Land” still waits for me in heaven.

    Amen Dineen,

I am an Israelite as well and so glad I am on this fantastic journey. Hugging you my friend and I will see you there… In the Promised Land.

Oh, how true, Dineen. Jesus never promised that life this side of heaven would be easy. The matter of fact is that He said we would have trials. The good thing is that He will never let go until we get to our promised land.
