Please Pass the Bread!

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

The Last Supper: Twelve men, one Savior. One loaf of blessed bread broken and passed. One cup of wine touching the lips of the One who spoke living words – then passed to the others. Twelve sinners sipping wine from the cup that would soon represent their Saviors blood, poured out for them like wine. Eating bread that would be remembered for centuries to come, as the body of the savior broken for them – broken for us.

His instructions? – “Do this in remembrance of Me.” Luke 22:19

What did Jesus want us to remember about Him in the bread and wine, the last supper, the ritual of communion?

Was it ever really about the bread or the cup of wine? I don’t think so. I think it was always about Him. It was always about His sacrifice for us, and our imitating Him by giving of ourselves to others. He took the bread, broke it and passed it; from one hand to another it circled the table.

If we take the bread and drink the wine but forget to love and serve our brothers, we miss the point. Christ’s body broken for us – our bodies giving to others. As offspring of our Savior we become broken bread and poured out wine, imitating Him. Our time, money, material possessions poured out in giving, serving, praying, and loving others, as our living daily sacrifice. Passing to them what we have received from Him – the true bread from heaven.

“For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:33

This is our communion, this is what we pass to others – Him!

With Easter just around the corner, let us examine ourselves through the lens of His word and see if the things we do in life we “Do in remembrance of Him.” Whether taking communion or giving a cup of water in His name. Every time we share the true Bread from Heaven with those around us, we pass out the life He came down from heaven to give to the world.

So please, pass the Bread.
