The Beautiful

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?  And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”  Romans 10:14-15 (ESV)

It has been said of Mother Teresa, that her feet were severely deformed.  Misshapen, not from a birth defect, but from years of wearing ill-fitting shoes.  Shoes that she grabbed from the bottom of donation barrels.  The leftovers.  Her feet,  grotesque in the eyes of man, I am sure are beautiful in the eyes of her Lord and Master.  Her feet were indeed shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace! (Eph. 6:15)

Many people spend years trying to decide the purpose for their lives.  They seek fulfillment in family, relationships, careers and countless other ways.  As Christians, our reason for being is quite different from non-believers.  After salvation, we exist to share the good news -the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The truth that the Kingdom of God has come- that Messiah was born and offers freedom and eternal life to all.  No matter our station in life, our purpose is the same.  Our audience varies from the little ones we are blessed to have sit at our feet to the desperate souls in the furthest reaches of the world.

As we enter the Christmas season, we see cards and children’s programs about the good tidings of great joy.  We will celebrate with ugly Christmas sweaters, parties, and sugary confections galore.  But will we share the good tidings of great joy?  Or will we fill our days with lesser activities?  Activities with no eternal import…

It is profoundly true.  People will not call on Him in whom they have not believed or heard.  We have the truth- the secret of joy; salvation; contentment, and peace.

Will we use our feet to go and tell?  As the young shepherds were quick to do on that most blessed of nights, will we tell those who have not heard that there is hope?  Will we equip people to go out, carrying the good news?

The Lord is challenging me in my heart- and through the words of a trusted mother in the faith- time is short.  We must be about the business that we were left to finish.  The Great Commission awaits.  The countless unreached souls cry from the far corners of the world….

Where have your feet carried you?  Will they be found beautiful in the eyes of the Lord?

Dear God, forgive me for frittering away my time, losing focus on what is important  to you.  Help me to be actively engaged in carrying the good news everywhere I go.  Help me to see the doors you have provided for me to walk through.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
