Earthly Things
As I mentioned in a previous post, one of my goals for the year is to memorize Colossians 3. I am taking this verse by verse so I am spending time focusing on what the verse says and what it means. As I review the verses as I’ve been adding new verses through the weeks, I continually start back at the beginning of this chapter and am reminded where I should have my mind and focus.
The first four verses say:
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:1-4
It is so easy to get side tracked and put emphasis on things that don’t matter. Where should our focus be? According to this verse we do not need to be focusing on earthly things. What earthly things distract you? Sometimes we have legitimate things that concern us….providing food for our family, keeping a roof over our heads, staying healthy. But so often we let the things of the world distract us. It isn’t going to matter in Heaven what kind of house you lived in or if you got a new car every year or if you could travel to every continent in your life. It isn’t going to matter if you had a six figure income or if you always had the newest iPhone or if you had your house decorated seasonally with all the cutest Pinterest projects. So many things that we focus so much attention on here are not going to matter at all one day because all of these are earthly things. Because we are in Christ, we need to focus on our ultimate goal of Heaven and helping others to get there. We need to remember to look at things here with a focus on eternity.
I challenge you today to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” What changes will you see in your life when you change your focus?

Amen my friend.
So true, Bethany. Our material things really do not matter at the end. I pray that I will keep my focus on the things above.
