Mighty Phone Warrior

Today I did something that I have been resisting doing for quite some time. I didn’t even realize that the change I made was delayed so long out of fear. But now that I am focusing on courage in 2014, it became clear. So, today I bought a new phone and changed my cell phone carrier! (Scary, I know, right? Ha ha!) I don’t know why I was afraid of it before, except that change in itself is difficult. I had been with my old company since I got my first cell phone many years ago, but knew I should change to be a better steward of the funds God has given us. I had all sorts of excuses before today, but now that it is done I am so relieved! I have lowered my monthly bill by $40 and I’ll be using a new device that will run more smoothly, have more storage and do more things! (I sound like a cell phone commercial, don’t I?) 

So, why is change so difficult? I think it is because, for most of us, we become too comfortable with what we know and we become overly fearful of the unknown. But that is not how God wants us to live, for He didn’t create us to live in fear.

There was a fearful man you may have heard of named Gideon who was so afraid of his enemies that he would hide in a winepress to thresh his wheat. He lived a life made many times more difficult due to his fear of what lay beyond the borders of his home. But God did not see Gideon as a man who lacked courage. In fact, in the book of Judges, the angel of the Lord’s first words to Gideon were to call him “Mighty Warrior”! I’m sure Gideon was quite surprised by that greeting for he was feeling anything but mighty or courageous! However, God knew what Gideon was capable of for He formed His character and knew His future. God had plans for this frightened man, who claimed to be the least member of the least family in Israel! A short time later, when Gideon placed His faith in the Lord, trusting Him for the outcome of the battle that was to come, he received the courage that God knew was in him. Gideon followed God and led the army of Israel to victory against the Midianites!

Now, I know that buying a new cell phone is minor in comparison to what God led Gideon to do, but what I am saying is that God did not make us to be cowering creatures like Gideon was when he was in the winepress. God wants us to live life with courage, trusting Him for our future. God doesn’t make mistakes when He evaluates our character. When He asks us to do something, large or small, He already knows that we can do it. He supplies all the strength, courage and wisdom it takes to do whatever tasks He has given us. All we need to do is place our trust in Him and live life outside of the winepress.
