The Importance of trust in our marriages

Have you ever been on a high ropes course or done a trust fall?  It’s become a regular part of our in-service training at school for both staff and students.  Nothing creates an environment of automatic interdependence like hanging on a rope 100 feet about the ground.  This fall, I had a moment where I put all of my trust in a co-worker.  The only thing between me and the next platform was her arm.  She was securely positioned and all I had to do was reach out and grab her arm.  Two things helped me to wrangle in my anxiety at that moment.

  1.  I knew she was securely stationed on the platform and I knew she had my best interest at heart.  Even in our newly formed friendship, she would not want to see me hurt.  I trusted her intent and her ability to get me across the ropes.
  2. I knew that no matter what happened, I was attached to a tether above my head and the farthest I could fall was a few inches.  I actually sat down into the harness a few times to feel the tension on the rope and remind myself how safe I really was.

Isn’t it like that in marriage too?  I just want to know that 1-You are able to take care of me and 2 – Your motivation, intent, purpose is to take care of me.  Now, why would your husband have any other intent?  Even when he blows it (forgetting a birthday?), it itsn’t malicious.  It’s just a mistake.

AND, even if things look bleak (i.e. he can’t find a job and you’re not sure he can provide), aren’t we all tethered in to SomeOne who holds the ropes, someone who is always trustworthy and able to take care of us?  This is the bedrock for my human relationships-even though people will fail me in one way or another, God is still under me, supporting me and catching me if I get dropped.

When my husband was told 9 years ago that his company was dissolving and he would no longer have a job in 6 months, he came home worried.  But, I never did.  I was completely confident in his ability to get another job.  And even if he couldn’t, I KNEW God wasn’t going to leave us hanging. That trust I showed in my husband is something he still remembers today.

Your relationship with your spouse is built upon trust-how are you showing that trust today?

P.S. Can I pray for your marriage today?  If so, leave a comment!

Trust is so important in relationships, especially marriage. And even if I’ve had times when I’ve been disappointed, I am so thankful that the Lord upholds me. I’ve also found that if you work at your marriage and hang in there through the tough times, it can get sweeter in time. After 29 years this is the best time in my marriage despite ongoing challenges. We are closer than ever and I’m loving that.

I’m so glad you are writing here at Laced with Grace. Welcome Heather!

    Blessings and love,
    Debbie

I loved the comparisons you made,Heather. After 7 years of marriage, I can say I trust my husband even more. We have had some hard times come our as far as provision is concerned, but I trusted him and God. I am always open for prayer for our marriage. My husband’s name is Mike. Thank you for sharing your heart today.
