Continuing to Hide God’s Word
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
Last year I wrote a post about how one of my 2013 goals was to memorize Colossians 3. I’m happy to say I was able to do this last year!
I know as a child there was always a strong emphasis placed on memorizing verses for Sunday School with stickers on a chart for saying a verse each week. As we become adults we may find ourselves doing less memorizing. There are many reasons people have for not memorizing, such as they don’t have the time, they think they can’t or aren’t good at it, or they just don’t think about it.
Today I wanted to share some tips that helped me last year as I memorized Colossians 3.
Here is what I did to memorize Colossians 3:
~ I read the entire chapter every day. I may have missed a day here or there, but for the most part this was part of my quiet time each day. It slowly became part of my memory through this repetition. Parts of the chapter were already familiar to me before I started memorizing, but this helped it all become familiar.
~ I wrote a verse at a time for two locations….one on an index card booklet (the kind with the rings like a spiral notebook) to put on the counter in front of the sink. Another place was on a sheet of paper hung on my bathroom mirror. I repeatedly saw the new verse I was learning throughout my day . I’d write a new verse every week or two, depending on how quickly I learned it.
~ I practiced the verses aloud. My son or husband listened to me recite it a few times through the year and helped me if I got stuck.
This year I have started memorizing Psalm 34.
It is so valuable to spend time in the word through scripture memorization. I know it really blessed my life to memorize Colossians 3. I hope you will take time to make scripture memorization a goal in your own life in 2014..

I love Colossians 3! It’s such a great passage. I am trying to memorize scripture with my boys each week. My mind isn’t like it used to be,but your tips are great! Thanks Bethany!
Thank you for sharing your method of memorization. I agree with your that memorizing Scripture is a true blessing and it will come in handy when things are not going well.
