Do You Know What You Believe?

I am currently taking summer college courses. One class that I needed for graduation is Philosophy, so I thought it would be a good one to take over the summer. Even though the majority of the class is studying the beliefs (or disbelief mainly) of Philosophers who claim that there is no God, it is interesting to me how people want to say they believe something, but they don’t know why.

Everyone believes in something and has faith in it, whether they want to admit it or not. Even those who claim there is no God, they have faith. They place their faith in thinking He doesn’t exist. Did you know that what we believe can affect every area of our life?  It is true, the things (or people) that we put our trust in will mold us into who we are.

But have you ever thought about what you believe and why?

One thing that I have already learned in my Philosophy class is that it isn’t enough to just believe in something, we have to support what we believe with why we believe it. I have come to the conclusion, in just a few weeks of participating in this class, that most people cannot explain why they believe in God.

In a recent discussion in class, we were asked this very question, “why do people choose to be religious?” The answers included because we were raised this way, because we fear an eternity in hell, and “I believe of God but I don’t believe in Him”. No one could give a personal reason why they believed in God.

Any kind of belief must first start with a foundation. No one would build a house without a strong foundation, so neither should our beliefs either. As Christians, if we want to build our house on a strong foundation, we must know what God’s Word says. There are too many Philosopical teachings and false doctrines that will lead us astray quickly if we haven’t studied God’s Word to be approved.

As strong as a non believer believes that he is right, we too, must be so strong in what we know of God. We must know what we believe, Who we believe and why we believe.

“For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I know Whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12-14)

Do you know what you believe?
