My God, My Friend

The picture above is my daughter and the son of some of our close friends. Through our friendship, our children have grown to be friends, in the toddler kind of way. Being a friend can be hard at times. Thankfully, my relationship with God has taught me a lot about being a friend.

Sometimes we may get mad or upset and find ourselves avoiding the source of the problem. It seems to be easier to walk away and avoid that which is troubling us than to face it head on and deal with the situation at hand.

Walking away is easier. It requires less strength.

And yet, it isn’t a true solution.

In times of need, many of us find ourselves turning to God with prayer. After all, even when life is difficult, God is great. He stands there, waiting for us to turn to Him and put our troubles in His hands. God must have really big hands because He succeeds! God is the ultimate friend.

In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD.
1 Samuel 1:10 NIV

Praying to God is like talking to a friend. A friend you can get angry at, and He still overlooks your flaws and accepts you for who you are. A friend who never abandons you and is standing in wait on any given hour on any given day. He is always there. Waiting for ME. Waiting for YOU. Always there. Always ready. Always waiting.

That is the kind of friend I long and strive to be.

Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house.
Job 29:4 NIV

No matter how old you are, you can be in your prime. You can feel God’s intimate friendship by simply WANTING it. By simply ASKING for it.

God has taught me to be a good friend. He has been there for me. I have leaned on Him. He, the ultimate teacher, has taught me. And He will teach you, if you let Him.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV

God is good. And He makes us better.

Lord,
Bless our hearts, our souls and our friendships. Help us to walk in your path of friendship and forgiveness. Allow us to open up to those who are in need and be available to them, just as you are available to us.

This we ask in Jesus’ name.

Frankly, God is the BEST friend you could ever have because He’s ALWAYS there… and humans fail us (and we fail our human friends!) from time to time.

    Blessings to you today.

That’s a precious picture CJ, and a wonderful reminder of the friend we have in our Heavenly Father. He is always only a breath away. It is a miraculous thought.
