Let your Light Shine
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
~ Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)
I have not followed NBA basketball for quite some years; I stopped watching after the Suns had their run for the title in the mid-nineties. This year though I started watching NBA basketball again. Although I am still a Suns fan (you have to living in Phoenix); a different, young team impressed me with their athleticism and speed; the OKC Thunder.
I like one of their star players in particular; Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant seemed different from most of the NBA ‘divas’. He is quiet, polite and humble. Sure, I never met Kevin Durant, but how he holds himself on the court and in post-game interviews is a fresh breath of air. Do you know what his first sentence is in a post-game interview? “I thank the Lord for the opportunity…” Wow, and that on national TV.
You see Kevin Durant went to a Christian High School and he has taking his faith public (and carries his Bible in the backpack). Isn’t that cool? We as followers of Christ should not be afraid of what others may think when we share our faith. We often step back because we want to be politically ‘correct’. Especially in ‘Corporate America’ you have to be careful on how much your share; someone may report you to the HR department.
As I am watching Kevin Durant sharing his faith, it gives me hope for this country and future generations. Why not share what you truly believe; and live it out loud. It is not so much what we say, but how we treat others. “Walk the walk…” as they say.
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.”
~ Matthew 10:28-22 (ESV)
Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank You for raising up a young man like Kevin. Lord, may our faith be bold and open like other public figures. Lord, may we give You all the glory in what we do. May the words of our mouths and meditation of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus precious name ~ Amen.
