A New Way of Thinking

In Romans 12:2a (NLT) we are given a challenge. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” As I read this verse I began to consider, “What exactly is a blessing or a trial?”

In general, when things are going smoothly in our lives, we consider these to be times of blessing. When we face difficulties or challenges, often we consider these times as trials. But what if the difficulties that we face are the times of blessing and the times when things are going smoothly are the times of trial? As I began to explore these thoughts God showed me a new way of thinking.

Some ask, “Why does God allow the ‘trials’ of life?” or “How could a loving God allow these things to happen?” Consider this – when is it that we call out to God and most strongly seek and experience His presence? Is it during the times of blessing or the times of trial? Could it be that God wants us to experience the fullness of His presence so deeply that He allows these ‘trials’ in order to draw us close to Him? We seek His protection, His provision and His comforting presence. God in turn pours out His peace. What is the greatest blessing? Isn’t it when we are closest to God experiencing His presence?

You may question, “How do the blessings become the trials?” The first definition of “trial” is “the act of testing.” In Luke 8:13-14 (ESV) Jesus is teaching the parable of the seeds when He speaks of a time of testing and falling away. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.” Could it be that the times of blessing are a time of testing – testing our relationship, our faith and trust in God. During these good times, do we draw closer to God, focusing on Him or do we tend to become complacent focusing more on the ‘things’ that we hope will make us feel happy?

When difficult times come, try a new way of thinking. God wants to bless you with an awareness of His presence and power. God will prove Himself to be sufficient to meet your every need. He is ready and able to help you. He loves you. As you look to Him, you will experience the blessing of God’s presence resulting in hope and peace.

Then, when all is well, get ready for the trial that will follow. Will you continue to focus on your relationship with God, growing and maturing in your faith? The things of the world may make us feel happy, but happiness is dependent upon our circumstances. True peace, joy and fulfillment can be found in God alone. He is the One who is faithful, the One who is sufficient, and the One who longs to have fellowship with you.

Are you experiencing a time of blessing or a time of trial? Try a new way of thinking. What once was considered a “trial” will lose its power and become a blessing as you experience the presence of God. And the times of blessing will give you the opportunity to share God’s love and grace to those who might need to experience a new way of thinking.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3 (NIV)

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9(NLT)

Wonderful post today Carol. Trials are temporary, so thankful for the molding process and blessing that comes from them.
