A Season of Remembering
I was 10 minutes late yesterday but not because I wasn’t ready on time. I couldn’t find my keys anywhere! I went from room to room until my daughter pointed out a pile of shiny metal right on the counter by the door! I’m that mom who forgets appointments even when they email me reminders and I never remember to get library books back on time. My poor husband is already worrying about me in my old age; if my memory stinks now, it certainly isn’t going to get any better.
God, in His rich wisdom, has told us time and again to remember all that He has done for us. He knows that we have feeble minds (well, at least I do!) and we need continual reminders of His goodness. He gave us the rainbow so we would remember that He is a God who keeps His promises and that He saves. He told us to keep the Sabbath so that we would remember HIM. He told the Israelites to put tassels on their clothing so they would remember His commands. The whole Passover was to remember what God had done in Egypt and how He saved His people.
We need to set up reminders to ourselves…because we so easily forget Who God is and what God has done in history and in our own lives. We forget that He is good and that He is powerful and that He has a plan that goes beyond our imagination. That’s why we need times to remember Who God is…these celebrations are like sticky notes to our heart reminding us of our Great God.
If you celebrate the Lenten season, you are entering into a season of remembering. This time in preparation for Easter is meant to prepare our hearts and to remind us of the most important moment in history. Let us use these days to remember God’s work in our lives and the power of the cross to change us. That is something that is too important to forget.
