An Angel in the Window

I think this story is a long time in coming. I hesitate to tell you what happened to me because it is still difficult to get my own mind around it. However, tonight I was lying in bed, wide-awake, asking God about the words would He like to share with my friends on Friday. Without hesitation, this experience came to me. God wants to remind us we are not alone in our struggles or in everyday life. Therefore, without further delay here is my story.

About eight years ago, we moved into a brand new neighborhood in a new state. We left behind family and friends just like most of the families in our area. We moved in two days after our new neighbors settled into their new home. We have become fast friends with these folks. They are wonderful people who also like playing cards and football (too bad they cheer for Green Bay).

We play cards on a Saturday night as often as we can. The conversation over Spades is fascinating, stimulating, funny, and always tempered with love. Consider the players: my husband is a liberal thinker and a nonbeliever, I am a blonde (does this indicate my card playing ability???) Christ fanatic, and my neighbors are both middle of the road, fun loving people.

Our card playing can go on for hours. Of course when the girls lag behind in the score we want to play all night until we are ahead. One evening, or should I say, early in the morning around 2:00 a.m. our card playing morphed into a discussion about faith. I remember telling our neighbors about my faith in Jesus during this late night jam session, I mean card game.

The four of us were seated at the kitchen table and I was facing a small window, which looks out to our side yard. As I was talking about Christ, I suddenly had the distinct impression that something was at the window. I was compelled to glance up. That is when I saw it.

A light. Brilliantly brigh, about the size of a golf ball. It was so white that it appeared outlined in blue. It reminded me of a candle flame with a blue tinge where it burns hottest.

In a split second, the light moved like it was caught spying. It jumped up from the lower right corner window seal to the middle of the window and then stopped dead center. It hesitated a fraction of a second, and then it turned back the same direction except heading up toward the top of the kitchen window and out of sight. I was awe struck. I stopped in mid-sentence to tell everyone what I had just witnessed.

Now I am sure this statement puzzled my neighbors. I was puzzled. This is one of those experiences you ask yourself about later. Did I really see what I think I saw?

For two years, I never told anyone else about this encounter. I was not certain it was real. Then one day God confirmed what I saw. My mother called. She had been praying for twelve hours over my sick brother. She said she saw a light, a small round brilliant light. I knew instantly what she saw. I knew then what I had seen. It was an angel.

I have asked God about this visitor many times. I am still not sure why on a late, card playing evening an angel was listening at my window. I have the distinct impression, however, it was pleased. Pleased to report I shared the gospel.

My telling of this story is to encourage every believer. We are not alone in our struggles. God has placed the Holy Spirit inside us and He sends angels to watch over us. They help us, protect, and serve. They are real and relevant today. How do I know? Because I saw an angel in my kitchen window.

There are ninety-nine references in the NIV regarding angels. Here are just a few:

Psalm 91:11
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

Hebrews 1:14
Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Luke 4:10
For it is written: ” ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;

Matthew 24:31
And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

Revelation 5:11
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.

Hebrews 13:2
Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.

Hebrews 1:14
Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Since that day, I often see turtledoves sitting on the fence in my yard. They remind me angels are standing guard, keeping me safe. They symbolize angels watching over God’s precious possession. YOU and ME. Look for angels, they surround us. Remember God’s blessings and love the next time a dove rests on your fence.

How blessed we are because our Father sends angels to help us! AMEN

Thank you, Lynn for sharing the story about your nightly visitor. I yet have to encounter such a visit myself, but I have heard many people tell me about them…
You know where their presence is the strongest? In the mission field. I have heard from a former co-worker that he had seen them many times in Taiwan. And if you knew that guy, you know he is telling the truth…

Blessings to you and yours today and always…

    Hi Lynn-

Thank you for sharing. This is a very powerful story.

I am curious, why do you feel it was an angel rather than the presence of Jesus? I have always loved angels but I want to make sure I am not thinking about the angels that surround me if what I should be focusing on is that Jesus is always with me.

    Blessings to you-
    Jennifer

SAHM: Thank you so much for stopping in today. I was nervous about posting this story, but felt compelled to share. I appreciate your encouragement.

Iris, I too, have heard about the mission field. Thank you for sharing with me today.

Jennifer, Good question and yes, I would never want anyone to focus on angels instead of Jesus. I was not sure it was an angel for a long time… until my mother told me what she saw. I hope this story points to the source of all love and the king of men and angels, Jesus 🙂

Dana, Be encouraged today. We are never alone… Thank you for stopping in.

Terri, you are too cute. Thank you!! Blessings, Lynn

What a great reminder of God’s protection and care over us.

Now, for my “not so spiritual” comment…I can totally relate to the never ending game of spades. We don’t play that often, because my husband is not a big cards player, but when we do, if we girls are losing, we will keep playing until we catch up too! Too funny! I never did like that old cliche “its not now you win or lose…”, but rather subscribe to this one: Winning isn’t everything but you don’t practice to come in second.

    Have a great day, Lynn!

Thank you for sharing this story with us Lynn! Lately I have been in need of this reminder, God constantly keeping watch over us, wether it is through the filling of His Holy Spirit, protection by His angels or the companionship of Christ…I know it and study it in scripture, but to actually have a recount of it happening to a friend who is flesh and blood makes it oh so real.

When I was in college I attended a week long retreat up in Lake Arrowhead with my church group. There was a lot of spiritual warfare that week and we all wrapped ourselves in the mantel of prayer and worship. One evening we were at a prayer and worship service down in the woods at the little amphitheater under the stars when all of a sudden I saw small glowing light balls floating in between all of us. Many of us saw these visitors and gave accounts of their movements being similar to those of the Seraphim that the bible talks about. We needed that visit of reassurance, protection, companionship and approval of our Father in heaven…and He gave it to us.

I too will be watching expectantly for His servants! 🙂

    I love you,
Blessings to you today and throughout this beautiful weekend!!

Lynn, that’s an awesome story. Awesome. I saw my baby’s face shine as though he was possessed by the Holy Spirit. It was an amazing experience. My husband has seen a few visions that were very real as yours was.

Oh, this was beautiful. I love the scriptures you’ve included here. Just recently my oldest son Noah said “She’s beautiful, Mommy.” and I asked who he was talking about. He said “the angel that sings to me at night.”

If anyone knows his story and all he’s been through, I have no doubt he has angels encamped around him every second of every day. Amazing.

Very cool! I am reminded of “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path”

Thanks for this story…God is so creative and always on time….
