Autumnal Equinox

Today marks the Autumnal Equinox for the Northern Hemisphere or in simpler everyday language it is the first day of Fall. Our days now have just about an equal amount of light and dark hours. I live in the Northeast so Fall/Autumn for me begins the opportunity for wearing a jacket or sweatshirt in the morning and evening as the temperature varies throughout the day. The windows of my home will be closed and opened depending on the temperature. I will put off as long as possible turning on the heat believing that Fall will stay a long time when in reality eventually Winter will come. Fall means the trees will be changing from their shades of green to beautiful yellows, reds, golds and oranges. It will happen gradually over the coming weeks and then in what seems like a matter of days the beautiful leaves will fall. When my girls were young we played a game announcing “which color was winning.”  Squirrels will be sighted gathering their acorns for winter. Flocks of birds will fly overhead on their way south. There will be an increase in traffic as “city” visitors descend upon orchards for apple picking and fields for the perfect pumpkin. As fall is upon us, I will decorate my home with pumpkins and mums. I will make homemade apple crisp – yummy! I will probably drink some apple cider and eat an apple cider donut.  I enjoy experiencing four distinct seasons. But you know what I cherish even more than the change of seasons is the knowledge that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 NIV
