“Church” Words

Yesterday I was seated at my computer preparing to write my Friday post. As I was plunking away at the computer keys, the telephone rang. The phone call was from God. Yes it was. Well, it was God demonstrating His sovereignty and omniscient presence in daily life (omnipresent).

Normally I don’t like to use “church” words like sovereign, omniscient and omnipresent. However, I cannot explain what happened yesterday without using them. (Look up their meaning)

The caller was an acquaintance I made last year through Bible study. I had not talked with her for probably six months because our studies changed and as you know, life interrupts good intentions of staying connected.

I was completely surprised by her call and finally when I realized who it was on the line, we exchanged typical pleasantries and a warm greeting. Then she got down to business. I could tell in her voice she was a bit shaken and hesitant.

She paused, “Lynn, I am not sure if you can help me but I just thought of you and knew I needed to call.”

“Okay, it’s probably not a mistake you called then. What’s up?”

“I have a friend that lives in Nevada. (I live in California) She is facing a serious cancer illness and has several other giant problems. My heart is broken for her and I would like to help but I don’t know what to do. I think she and her precious family need counseling. I don’t even know where to start.”

I sat motionless in my chair realizing that I was part of a divine moment in the Kingdom. *gulp* *double gulp*

I paused and then said, “Well, it is not a mistake you called because I once lived where your friend lives right now.” God is omniscient.

“I can tell you exactly where she can go for Godly help and counseling. I know a church in town which offers counseling for cancer patients. Also I can recommend the name of a Godly pastor, who I know personally.”

God is omniscient. He knew a hurting woman in Nevada needed help.

God is omnipresent. He knew she would reach out to a friend in California.

God’s sovereignty pushed my Bible study friend to telephone me even though we have not spoken in a long time. She didn’t even understand why she picked up the phone to call me.

God is in control of our phone calls! He is all knowing, ever present and absolute!

I shared information about the church with my friend. I told her about the people there and how they could help her friend in Nevada. Interestingly, the church is not far from where this family lives. Coincidence? NOT!

We hung up and I sat at my computer. “God is sovereign. God is sovereign. God is sovereign.” It is all I can utter!

Lord God, When will we understand how complete You are? You are in full control, even when things appear out of control. You know our future. You have redeemed our past. You know our thoughts even before we think them.

God we praise You. You are sovereign. In Jesus name, Amen.

Psalm 139: 1-4 (New International Version)

1 O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

    These stories just give me chill bumps. God-sightings. He is all those big church words. He’s also really, really cool. Thanks Lynn.

    This story really puts into perspective living by His Spirit. So many people think the the “interruptions” of life are merely just interruptions, but they are so often divine appointments God intended. Thank you so much for sharing! To God be the Glory!

    Thanks for reminding me of this wonderful truth. There is a wonderful book out called God Winks,and this is just the kind of thing it talks about. Life would be easier for me if I would remember that He is in control and not me.
    Love your blog!

    That is so true. I learned to answer those little nudges from Him. If someone comes to mind, I usually start praying for them and sometimes I even pick up the phone 🙂

    Blessings to you and yours.
