To What are you Clinging?
To what are you clinging? I see it every day. Children cling to their moms as they are being escorted to their classroom at school. The little ones don’t want mama to leave. That separation is so hard, especially for moms. 🙂
There are times when children cling to my legs. It’s like Velcro that sticks.
And then the children find one another and cling to each other.
According to the dictionary, cling is defined as:
- to adhere closely; stick to
- to hold tight, as by grasping and embracing; cleave
- to be or remain close
- to remain attached, as to an idea, hope, memory, etc
I have a confession to make. I tend to cling. I cling to my plans. I set my goals. I establish my plan and then I set out to work my plan. But then …life gets in the way. Suddenly, my plans get pushed to the side. Inside I feel frustrated and even a bit resentful. Over time and much prayer, I realize that my plans aren’t the most important.
Instead of clinging to my plans and my way, I’ve been learning to trust God and His plans. In the midst of trying circumstances, He is present. If only …I learn to cling to Him.
Psalm 63:7-8 (ESV)
“For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.”
As I learn to bloom where I’ve been planted, I discover many every day blessings. This helps me to continue to trust. When I let go of my plans and learn to walk clinging to Him, He provides me with divine appointments. I am more alert to those internal promptings from His Spirit within me. I find myself smiling as I surrender myself to His plans. After all, He created me. He loves me. He has plans for my life. I don’t want to be clinging and pursuing my own. What I also realize is that His plans bring delight to my soul. I couldn’t have planned it better.
Embrace God’s plans for your life. He knows your innermost desires. He created you for work He planned in advance. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to miss out on His best for me by clinging to my own plans.

Amen to that Debbie. I have had plans for years, but like you said ‘life gets in the way’. His plans are much better, and we need to let God help us reshape our own plans.
Yes Iris, He knows what’s best for us. After all, He created us! 🙂
Great post Debbie. I’m still learning to stop clinging to my plans and trust God’s plans for my life.
Amen, amen.
Ouch! my plans are the most important aren’t they? I’m teasing but that is truly the way I feel so many times. A great post, full of truth! Happy week!
So many great thoughts here Debbie! Always blessed to visit with you as you point to truth!
Kindly, Lorraine
Love this, Debbie. I thought about how clingy a dryer sheet is. I’m always pulling them off things! Wouldn’t it be great if we clung to God that way?
