Confession of a Hallmark Christmas Movies Watcher

I have a confession to make… in the weeks leading up to Christmas I get caught up in watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel.  My husband humors me and even watches with me sometimes. We laugh at the predictable cookie cutter formula and compete to finish the characters lines as we watch. (We don’t officially keep score but I’m winning).

I’ve noticed that in most of the movies there is usually one person who is literally the personification of what Christmas should be, happy, joyful, caring… That person is not always the main character, but they attract your attention because of their joyful personality. You wonder how they are so full of Christmas cheer when many others aren’t.

I admit, although I love watching the movies there are times, I’m a tad disappointed. A lot of emphasis is placed on Christmas joy, Christmas magic, and the importance of family and friends. However, if you don’t know the origin of Christmas you probably won’t get it from the movies. Little or no emphasis is placed on what the true meaning of the season is and why we should be filled with joy.

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)

My Christmas wish is that amid the busyness of the season people would stop and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, the priceless gift that God gave to the world. His son, Jesus Christ. I pray that this season, those who never knew Him will come to know Him and that His true joy will fill their hearts during the Christmas season and beyond.

    I have watched a couple of Hallmark Christmas movies, and they are entertaining. You are right; true joy and the Christmas spirit comes from God sending His son to save us. Thank you for the reminder this Christmas season.

    I am a Christmas movie fanatic! There’s just something about a story of love and giving, while the movies don’t always portray the nativity story, the theme of love, joy and sacrifice underlines the true meaning of it all.
