Drought Conditions

Right now in West Texas things are even drier than usual. Rainfall levels are way below normal. The city water supply is extremely low. City officials have responded to these drought conditions by imposing water restrictions. Right now the restrictions limit outdoor water use, but if residents don’t cooperate and the drought continues the city will resort to stronger, mandatory restrictions.

Our yard just recently began to show signs of spring life. The trees have all leafed out and the grass is greening. But without water, this won’t continue. Water is necessary for physical life. Without it our trees and grass won’t survive. Without it we cannot survive.

It’s no coincidence that Jesus referred to Himself as “living water.” He alone can quench our spiritual thirst. Without Him we have no spiritual life.

In John chapter 4, Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a water well outside the town of Sychar. Even though her water jug was full this woman was dying for lack of water. Spiritually parched, she soaked up the spiritual water Jesus offered. She even shared it with the entire town.

Do you ever feel spiritually dry? I do. Usually my spiritual thirst develops because I’ve been “too busy” to drink fully from the source of Living Water. I hurry through my time with Him and move on with my day before my roots have had a chance to benefit fully from the spiritual nourishment He gives. Like this dry, West Texas soil, my thirsty soul needs more than a quick five-minute shower.

One of my favorite passages reminds me of my need to stay rooted into the source of spiritual water.

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not whither. Whatever he does prospers.  Psalm 1:1-3, NIV

Do you feel spiritually dry today? How can you allow Jesus to water your thirsty soul?

When I rush through my morning time, my day usually does not go too great. I try to keep refreshed through-out the day, but sometimes my day just rushes past me without taking a quick break of prayer or prayer. May I break intentionally today to get refreshed.
