Easter…the gift that goes on and on
Some of the sweetest memories I have is past Easters with our children. It was always a tradition at our house to have a HUGE egg hunt. No matter rain nor shine nor adulthood…our children looked forward to it.
It was not uncommon for us to hide up to 100 eggs in our yard. The fun part was trying to remember where all of our hiding places were. Almost every year we could miss an egg or two but invariably it would always show up sometime later on in the year.
Each egg would contain some kind of treat, either chocolate form or cash form so you can imagine the fun we had when we would uncover an egg in July with a treat in it. It was like a gift that just kept giving, it never got old. Even when we couldn’t see the treasure…it was always there. Reminds me of the eternal gift that keeps giving even when we don’t see it, the gift of His resurrection is always there
Look at the following verse:
“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.’” – John 20:19-23
One of the most amazing, wonderful messages of the gospel is that it is not over. Just like our Easter hung hunts, which didn’t seem to end with the final egg found. Christ’s work also didn’t end at the resurrection. Instead, He gave us the Holy Spirit. The unexpected gift, that continues to remind us how much he loves us, and the sacrifice he made so that we could be together again.
As we approach yet another family tradition at our house, another egg hunt, may we celebrate Easter with a grateful heart and may we remember that the love of Christ never ends. It goes on and on and even when we can’t see it…It is there. He is there.
HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY!
