Election Predictions

Well, three debates have come and gone. With the election less than two weeks away and still too close to call, social media and news media outlets are abuzz with comments and opinions of  people and pundits from both sides of the political fence, disparaging their opponents and claiming victory for their candidates. Uncertainty seems the order of the day.

But as believers, we have certainty. We have assurance that there is One who reigns supreme regardless of who is in political power. Our hope is not in a politician or a platform or a policy or a prediction or a political party.

Our hope is based on eternal not earthly predictions.

I saw a picture on Facebook recently that read:

Top 10 Predictions No Matter Who Wins The Election:

  1. The Bible will still have all the answers.
  2. Prayer will still work.
  3. The Holy Spirit will still move.
  4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people.
  5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.
  6. There will still be singing of praise to God.
  7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
  8. There will still be room at the Cross.
  9. Jesus will still love you.
  10. Jesus will still save the lost when they come to Him.

Isn’t it great to know who is really in control?

Years ago while I was studying feverishly for an exam, a fellow student – who wanted me to stop studying and start  partying – joked with what he meant to be a humorous question, and it ended up having a profound impact on my life. He asked, “Will this really upset the cosmic order of the universe?”

This has become sort of a litmus test for me in all areas of my life, including the current political climate. I don’t believe that if a certain Democrat or Republican is elected, God’s universe will be shaken. Jesus lived under the Roman Empire, one of the most corrupt governments in recorded history, and He said, “…render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Matt. 22:21  Paul instructed us in Romans 13 to submit to the ruling authorities.

So should we vote? Should we pay attention to politics? Absolutely. It is a privilege we have that many in the world do not.

Edmund Burke’s quote, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” is still as true as ever. We need to stand for -and take action for- righteousness, goodness, justice, love, and mercy.  And through prayer, we can personally bring all our concerns to the One who controls the universe.

And we can do this with whomever is elected President.
