Esperar

I’m taking a Spanish class and I’ve been doing some basic vocabulary. It hit me as I was going through my flashcards that “esperar” mean two different things.

“- to hope”

“- to wait”

Not so in the Greek; they are different words, but in Spanish, to hope and to wait can be the same word.

For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. (Gal. 5:5 ESV)

One of the things that I’m not so good at is waiting. But we wait – and we wait eagerly. We endure.

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:3-5 ESV)

What are we waiting for?

But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Romans 8:25)

There is a time and a place for moving, and a time and a place for waiting. If I learn the fruit of patience, I will learn to wait upon the Lord; to wait for His timing, which He will make clear to me – if I’m quiet enough to listen.

If we hope for what we do not see, we wait…

We eagerly wait for the hope…

Waiting and hope are intertwined – to hope without waiting is not hope, it is taking action to accomplish something yourself. To wait without hope has no goal and there is no purpose; no end game.

But there is an end game…eternity. God sees eternity and He wants us to be patient (as hard as that is). It is hope that has up waiting and it is waiting that feeds our hope.

Esperamos – we all wait.

For the coming of Christ, for eternity, for the righteousness of Christ.

Esperamos – we all hope.

For our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ…

And while we wait and hope…we love. Faith…hope…love. The greatest of these is love.

I like this word of Esperar, I will remember it deeply in my heart. When waiting, hope in heart, hope on face, hope in action, hope in words.
    Thanks…

In a book I just read the first sentence it “waiting is a complicated longing” (After The Leaves Fall) That quote stuck me as so profound.

We are waiting for the future, but fear the future.
Waiting for change, but fear change.
    Etc…

But with Hope it drives out fear.

    Blessings.

This is a neat post. Waiting and hope are intertwined. I guess I had not put much thought to this. It is true. I am waiting and hopeful.

    Neat!
