How Do You See Yourself?
How do you see yourself? There’s a way you can discover an answer to this question. If we could listen in on your self-talk, what kind of things would we hear?
- I am so scattered
- I am unfocused
- I am fat
- I am ugly
- I have no patience
- I am depressed
- I am lonely
This is just a list of possible things one might say in their head.
But what we think and believe about ourselves becomes our reality. If you think you’re impatient, you may shrug your shoulders and say ‘well, that’s just the way I am’. Our words have an influence on our behavior.
Proverbs 18:21 says: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
And Matthew 12:34 b says: “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”
You may think you’re the only one who hears those thoughts inside your head. But God hears it all.
When I consider what the Bible tells me about God’s thoughts towards me, it causes me to stop.
Jeremiah 29:11 “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
What a difference! And He knows our thoughts and our words before they are even spoken.
Psalm 139:1-4 says: “O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.”
So how do you go about gaining some control over your thoughts? You go to the Word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
When you talk to yourself begin to commit yourself to the Lord. God knows what you need. The Holy Spirit will help you to overcome areas in your life that need changing. So take every thought captive. Rely on God’s Word and not yours.
So how about you? How do you see yourself? How’s your self-talk?
Blessings and love,
- When it just doesn’t make sense…
- Thirsty?
Thought provoking post.
Thank you for always adding your comments sweet Denise.
Thank you Debbie, for this post. I lived my life in a realm of negative self talk for years, that it actually became a part of my identity, although false. It’s taken me years to even get a little further along in believing I am who God says I am. I am a work in progress, and some days my tongue slips. So thankful that He continually reminds me that I am His and I am worthy of His affection.
Believe the Truth Barbie and not the enemy’s lies. You are beautiful and loved.
You are right, Debbie; we need to stop the negative self-talk. We need to remember that we are wonderfully and fearfully made by God.
Thank you for the reminder to be more positive about ourselves.
It can be all too easy to believe the lies Iris. But God loves you and so do I my friend.
Debbie,
Just popped over here today, wondering what you’d have to share – so glad I did. I love the verses you used, have been favorites for a long time, and yet, how I need to be reminded of how God loves me, and to be reminded that the enemy creeps about, filling my head with doubts and lies about who I am. Thanks my friend.
Well said Debbie
Heard my pastor talk on the “voice of the Lord” last night
The creative powerful voice that we all need to hear.
Glad I stopped by
Thanks for the reminder
