I want to see!
A few weeks ago, I saw a YouTube video of a man receiving a pair of Enchroma sunglasses from his family. My understanding is that Enchroma sunglasses allow people who are color blind to see color. It was a heartwarming video and the guy in the video was overwhelmed by the colors he was experiencing. I can’t even imagine how thrilling that must have been. One comment in the video continues to occupy my thoughts. A family member stated “Now, you can see like we see.” Wow, I can’t stop thinking about that. Not in relation to seeing color but in how I see vs how God sees.
Not having physical sight isn’t something I struggle with everyday but there are times I don’t see. When I was in my late teens, I was blind for two days. My eyes were bandaged due to an injury to my corneas. Contact lenses at the time were “hard” not soft like they are today, resin dust from my pointe shoes got under my lenses and caused a scratch on each of my eyes. It was definitely a learning experience when I realized how little I could do without my sight. I depended on those who could see.
In three of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) there is the story of Jesus giving sight to two blind men. The men heard that Jesus was passing by and they yelled for him. Jesus stopped and asked “what do you want?” They replied, “we want to see!”
29-31 As they were leaving Jericho, a huge crowd followed. Suddenly they came upon two blind men sitting alongside the road. When they heard it was Jesus passing, they cried out, “Master, have mercy on us! Mercy, Son of David!” The crowd tried to hush them up, but they got all the louder, crying, “Master, have mercy on us! Mercy, Son of David!”
32 Jesus stopped and called over, “What do you want from me?”
33 They said, “Master, we want our eyes opened. We want to see!”
34 Deeply moved, Jesus touched their eyes. They had their sight back that very instant, and joined the procession.
Matthew 20:29-34 The Message (MSG)
That’s my prayer – I want to see.
12 We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! 13 But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love. 1 Corinthians 13 The Message
- Too busy?
- When God Turns Up The Heat
You are right; we are often blind to see the things right in front of us. May God open my eyes to be open to see.
Too often we choose to be blind but I’m thankful that because of Christ I can see!
Amen.
I think seeing is something I have to be intentional about. Asking to open my eyes every day.
