I Want What She’s Having!
Matthew 5:16 Amplified Bible
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your [a]moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and [b]recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.”
Several years ago our daughter, Heather and I were at the deli department of a local store. While we were waiting our turn at the deli, a very humorous thought came to my mind and I began to laugh uncontrollably. In utter embarrassment, Heather leaned over and asked what my problem was? I tried to control myself enough to tell her why I was laughing and in so doing Heather began to laugh so hard that she was about to pee her pants! When the lady behind the deli counter asked the next person in line what they wanted, the lady replied, “I want what she’s having!” You can imagine – everyone around just started laughing!
I cannot say exactly what was so funny, but the comment from the lady made me ponder. “I want what she’s having!” Wow, that hit me like a ton of bricks! Do I live my life in a way that others will want what I have? As I go about my daily routine, to the store, work, and school, wherever I go – do I reflect Christ’s love, hope, grace, and mercy that others will say, “I want what she’s having!”?
We all have difficult days, our struggles, challenges, times of despair even; but how I live them out at home and in public is a reflection of Christ who lives in me and through me. I have tried to make it a practice that no matter how I feel, when I go out – anywhere- I will comb my hair, put on a little makeup, dress appropriately (not in grubby clothes) and put on Christ. What do I mean by put on Christ? I think to myself – What would Jesus do? Would he have a sour face? Would He be grumpy? Would Christ smile as others pass Him by? If Christ saw someone standing in a grocery isle needing help reaching an item would He help them? These are just little things, yet to others, you may be the only one who cared enough that day to give them a smile, a sweet greeting, or assist them in the store or even help a neighbor next door. Each time we do even those simplest things, we are living examples of Christ.
I can remember when I was wheelchair bound there were occasions when people would not give me the time of day. They would just stare as I struggled to reach something or they would walk around me. Today, as I am no longer wheelchair bound, when I am in a store there will be occasions when I will have ladies ask me if I would help them find something, or if certain items of clothing look good together. I will nicely explain that I do not work there, but I would be eager to assist them. They are so appreciative and on many occasions it will lead to a conversation about Christ. It would be so easy to tell them I am busy (and let’s face it who isn’t busy these days), but I take these precious moments as opportunities to show Christ through me.
So, next time you go out the door, look in the mirror, then look in your heart and ask yourself, do I reflect Christ enough that others will want to say, “I want what she’s having!”

So true, Michele. We need to put on Christ before leaving the house so that many will see who we belong to.
