“I’m Stuck. Help, Me! “

"At the heart of the story stands the cross of Christ where evil did its worst and met its match."
~ John Wenham ~

“Mom?” “Mommy?” “Mommy, HELP. I’m stuck! Mommy! Help me!” Noah’s voice rose in both tone and volume, as he became more and more panicked. I followed his voice to the kitchen. I was somewhat afraid of what my 5 year old had gotten himself into, this time. I could tell it wasn’t the “injury cry” this one was different.

I turned the corner and found him wedged between my china cabinet and a counter top. His face and hands were smeared with Nestle “Quik” chocolate powder. (We won’t talk about that mess. But- can cocoa mix double as potpourri? Just wondering. It was the best smelling mess he’s made in a while. ) There was a chair, standing in front of the cabinets. He must have used the chair to climb over- then down, into the corner hidey spot. Once he was in, he couldn’t get back out. There was nothing to climb up and no wiggle room. Noah was stuck. With a capital “S” . And he knew it.

“Mommy. I’m stuck. Help me.”
His little dirty hands reached out to me. I did what every Mom would do. (well- once I saw he was fine, and after I told him I’d get him and took a quick picture…;) I carefully picked him up. I did what he could not. I rescued him from his trap.

At the heart of the story of the cross I met Jesus, the same way Noah met me, this afternoon. I was stuck too. I was tightly wedged into a hidey hole of sin and pain. Like Noah- I couldn’t do anything to get myself out. I couldn’t climb out, by trying to be good. I just couldn’t be good enough. (The truth is, no one can) I couldn’t pretend not to be stuck. I couldn’t help myself, one bit.

One afternoon, in a fit of teenaged turmoil and pain, I tried to kill myself. A bottle of pills only proved yet again, that I could not save myself from, or in, this life. The suicide attempt only got me a nice little stay in a hospital with mesh covered windows and jello 3 times a day, but it didn’t save me.

I needed to be rescued. Desperately. One day, in December of 1985, after hours of questions and talk- with my boyfriend ( now husband) after countless hours of reading the Bible, for the very first time, I finally lifted up my dirty teenaged face, raised my hands and said, “Jesus! help me! I’m stuck. ” And Jesus, did.

The very worst- that evil tried to do to entrap, strangle and kill me- body and soul, Jesus overcame, one Sunday, on a cross. He rescued me. Evil had met it’s match, in Christs’ love.

Are you stuck? Do you feel pinned into a hidey hole that you can’t get out of? Do you feel like you can’t climb out of the sin or the pain that you’re in? Do you need to be rescued?

Just ask. He’s the way, the only one who can reach down and pick you up.

Psalm 144:3-7
” O LORD, what is man that you care for him,
the son of man that you think of him?
Man is like a breath;
his days are like a fleeting shadow.
Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down;
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
Send forth lightning and scatter {the enemies};
shoot your arrows and rout them.
Reach down your hand from on high;
deliver me and rescue me “

Roman’s 4:5-8
“However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
“Blessed are they
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man
whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”

“Dear Jesus- I pray that those who are stuck, would call out to you. You alone are the one who can rescue us. We can never be good enough- strong enough or clever enough to save ourselves, but you can. You’ve already done the work, evil has met it’s match- in your love, on the cross. Jesus, I’m stuck. Rescue me! Amen.”

    What a beautiful picture you painted about how we reach out to God when there is no where else to go…wow……thanks for sharing!
    Blessings

    This was wonderfully written as usual. This is just was Jesus does- saves us, rescues us from the slimy pits we get ourselves stuck in. Not because we deserve it, but because he loves us. The enemy wants to destroy us, but he lost in your case (Praise God!), but God is bigger. With the cross he defeated our enemy. OOps. Now I’m crying. Thank you for this lovely post. Love the picture too!

    Oh my goodness I loved this, and the picture tops it off. Great application, so many times I find myself in the same situation…and yes due to stress there tends to be chocolate smeared all over me too. =)

    Evil had met it’s match, in Christs’ love. Amen… Amen… Amen.

    This is so well written. I am amazed how every week your family offers up such great stories of living in the love of Christ. Wonderful.

    What a great analogy with your son’s story, and your personal testimony is powerful! I loved this! I love that there are no “hidey holes” where we can go that He cannot set us free. Have a blessed day, and thank you so much for sharing this. 🙂

    I loved reading this!

    Many times I have found myself stuck (more than likely with chocolate on my face too *giggle*) and our wonderful Lord has never failed to pick me up again.

    Thanks for the story!
