Independence Day?
Today is Independence Day in America. Independence is a highly prized virtue in our society. Just as our forefathers fought for independence from Britain, we continue to struggle for independence. We shun depending on others and want to “stand on our own two feet,” and “make our own way in the world.”
When my oldest son was a few weeks shy of one year old he took his first steps — on Independence Day. At three years old he said he “didn’t need” me to accompany him on his first field trip. Our kids strive for independence from the time they can walk and talk. “I can do it myself!” is a common refrain. We do want our children to be able to do things for themselves, but they also need to learn to depend on others, and especially to depend on God.
Parents also want independence. As our parents age we are faced with decisions about their living situations. Almost everyone prefers to live in his or her own home, without assistance if possible. Recently, my 85 year-old mom wasn’t feeling well for about a week, but she didn’t want to tell anyone. She didn’t want to have to depend on others, or be moved out of her house, so she tried to “tough it out” on her own. She also fears losing her driver’s license, which affords her a lot of independence of movement (in L.A. it is almost a necessity).
I too struggle with the desire to be independent. I want to make decisions on my own, be responsible for myself, be “self-reliant.” But we are not islands. Whether we like it or not, we are dependent on others. We need others to help us do things we can’t do, see things we can’t see, view things from a new perspective. Most importantly, we need God. We can’t live the purpose-filled lives we are called to live without daily reliance on the One Who gives us purpose.
As we gather for bar-b-ques and watch fireworks’ displays, let’s remember our independence has limits. God is dependable and we can (and must) depend on Him.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
- The Art of Being
- True Freedom
What a great reminder to rely on God. Yes, we love to be independent, but He gives us the strength that we need to get us through our independence.
