The Power of a Hug

Human touch; there is power in a hug.

Teaching 19 three year olds to get along can be challenging.  Teacher Heidi read a book called “When You’re Angry and You Know It” to our classroom.  When the children play together, they have a tendency to take toys from one another.  They don’t like to share. Occasionally, they push one another.

The book suggested telling the person that you’re angry and walking away.  If they continued to bother the child, they were to come to the teacher.

Later that morning on the playground, I could hear a few of the children practice what they were learning.

Frustrated Oliver came running to Heidi (teacher) and complained that Dax had pushed him.  She immediately summoned Dax and the two stood face to face.

Heidi: Dax, did you push Oliver?

Dax: Yes

Heidi: What do you say to Oliver?

Dax: I’m sorry

Heidi: Ask Oliver if he is OK.

Dax: Are you OK Oliver?

Oliver: No

Heidi:  Ask Oliver what you can do to help make him feel better.

Dax: What can I do to make you feel better?

Oliver: (waits a bit) I think a hug will make me feel better.

Dax and Oliver walk away friends.  If only life were that simple.

As I walk the little children to a holding room or to the office, I often find their little hands holding onto mine.  A smile comes to my face. Yes, there are plenty of germs.  And yes, they probably coughed into that hand.  But it’s worth it to me!  I’ll just remember to wash my hands more often. 🙂

I don’t know about you but sometimes a hug is just what I need.  I’ve often been known to send a blog hug to a blogging friend.  No we cannot feel the hug physically, but they get the message.

If we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world, we can learn from little children.  A smile and a hug may be a good start.

Yes, there is something healing about a hug. I like to give hugs and receive them.

Thank you for the reminder that hug can make everything better.

amen. makes me think about when my kids were little and somehow getting a hug from mommy or daddy always made things better. We are the arms of God extended…someone needs a hug wrapped in God’s love today. 🙂

I was at a new job a few years ago and strugging with the computor while working customer service. The customer could tell I was frustrated and nervous. He came behind the counter and gave me a hug and told me to take my time! I’ll always remember that!

Yes, sometimes a hug can make your day. At church they know that my fibromyalgia and my body feels like a giant bruise, but I tell them I still want a hug… so they gently hug me.

Yes, hugs can be so healing! And you are right…a hug can take differnt forms (such as a blogging hug). When I am feeling low, a simple smile or an encouraging word from someone works wonders!

    Blessings AND Hugs, Joan

P.S. I’m glad Oliver & Dax are friends again!

Oh, I love giving and receiving smiles and hugs! They are often the “Balm in Gilead” to my soul. Great entry Debbie! Easter blessings to you!

That was sweet! It will take years to master, but I like to think we start them out on the road to caring, considerate friends. Any time you need a hug (or even if you don’t), Debbie, I will give you one! We are all in this together under God’s love!
…and wash your hands- you know they weren’t just coughed on… 🙂

Ah!!! That is precious. Thank you, Debbie. I wonder how many problems could be solved if we tried this first! Lori
