Remember God’s Goodness

As we get closer to the Christmas festivities, many of us get so busy with the details that we come down with a case of the forgetfulness.

It is never intentional, but while we busy ourselves with all of our lists; gifts to buy, cards to send, food to buy, parties to attend – we tend to leave Christ entirely off of our to-do lists. I know people who are exceptionally good at remembering details, but when it comes to remembering the goodness of God, their minds go blank (or at least go speechless). Especially at Christmas time.

That may sound impossible to you, after all, it’s Christmas; the season where we celebrate Jesus. But if we aren’t careful, Jesus only shows up in the manger scene during the kid’s Christmas play. In our busyness, we tend to forget that Jesus is actually the reason for the season.

God knows all about our tendency to forget. The Israelites had a hard time remembering the goodness of God too. Bringing them out of Egypt through a parted Red Sea seems like something worth remembering, but it didn’t take long for the Israelites to think upon something else:

They forgot the God Who saved them, Who had done great things in Egypt, miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.” (Psalm 106:21,22)

Christmas can become one of the busiest times of the year and the closer we come to arriving at the last hour, the more stress we feel and the less joy we experience. While in all of the hustle and bustle, we may lose sight of Jesus and His joy but the good news is, He never loses sight of us!

Isn’t that amazing? No matter how busy we become, God is always with us. He chooses us, and we, too, have to choose Him to be in our Christmas. Jesus told Martha (and He tells us too), “you are worried and upset over all these details! There is one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it and it will not be taken away from her.” (See Luke 10:41, 42)

The one thing worth remembering is Jesus. Don’t be so busy that you forget all that He has brought you through. Don’t forget that Jesus is the reason we celebrate this season of joy. Downsize your lists, if needed, to upgrade your spirit of joy this Christmas season. Put Jesus at the top of your list!

Merry Christmas to all!
