What Satisfies You?
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 (NLT)
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” John 10:10 (NLT)
I had never looked at these scriptures in reference to my issues with my weight. I have struggled and played the yo-yo games in regards to my weight all my adult life. I have listened to the doctors, diet plans, nutritionists, friends, co-workers, family – you name it I have listened, I have tried and I have failed. They all gave helpful tips, suggestions and advice, but they were really band-aides to cover up the real issues I have been harboring.
The key points in the above bible scriptures have struck home. They have zeroed in to the heart of my weight struggles.
1) Jesus tells us in John 8:32 that I can know the truth, and the truth will set me free. Free from what? Free from all the lies and deceptions that the devil throws at me every day to try to confuse me so I cannot decipher for myself what is truth and what are lies.
2) In John 10:10 Jesus tells us that the thief’s (Satan) purpose is to destroy us; but His (God) purpose is to give us a rich and satisfying life.
I have placed my trust in things and people when it comes to my health and weight issues. Of course I would pray to the Lord to remove these things that weigh me down and rob me of my good health; but, I was still trusting in the advice of others when it came to my health and weight issues. I am not saying we should not listen to the “professionals” when it comes to our health and weight issues, what I am saying is that their words should not be the final words or say on our behalf. We need to take what the professionals suggest- to the Lord who is the source of all truth and weigh them upon His Truth. We need to ask the Lord, “Is this the direction you want me to take? Is this the medication or diet I should go on? Are there other issues at hand here? Is there something deep within me keeping me from succeeding in my health/weight loss goals? ”
Too many of us use obstacles/things to try to satisfy our longings. We believe the author of all lies who whispers in our ears, “satisfy that longing with a little chocolate- or an office affair – or a cigarette – or a drug – or a little wine- or latte’. No one will have to know.” The big problem with these lies is that they are addicting because in truth they can NEVER satisfy us! We continue to indulge ourselves with things because we think that maybe if I just had a little more of _____ then I will be satisfied and my issues will be solved. How many times have we found out the exact opposite! The more we try to satisfy ourselves with THINGS or PEOPLE the more unsatisfied we become.
The doctors, medications and diets are only tools to aide through our issues, but the Lord is the only One who can guide us to the Truth that will eventually set us free. Free from ALL that weighs us down – free from all the lies and deceptions we have believed all our lives. Free to live rich and satisfying lives through Christ who sets us free from all sin and lies.
Oh gracious heavenly Father, I ask that You would search our hearts and show us the lies we have been believing. Free us from all that weighs us down and keeps us in bondage. Lord, may we learn that only YOU can truly satisfy our heart’s desires. Lord, may we break the ties that bind us as we learn of Your Truth that sets us free; in Jesus precious name, Amen.
