How Do You Spend Your Time?
How do you spend your time? What consumes much of your time, energy and thoughts?
I’m amazed at how quickly time passes while doing mindless activities. Hours can be easily wasted on TV, computer games and texting.
I recently heard about a book that sounded interesting to me. It was called “20,000 Days and Counting” by Robert D. Smith. I visited the website and discovered a calculator where you can simply plug in your birth date and it calculates how many days you’ve been alive. I found out that I’ve been alive 21,921 days. It’s kind of odd to think of my life in this way. But it got me thinking about how I spend my time.
Our schedules have become so jam packed. I notice how some of the children in our school get picked up only to go to soccer, dance, music lessons, voice, etc. While all of these activities are good, the parents work all day. By the time the kids get home, finish homework and get ready for bed there’s not much time for talk and family time. I think about the years that go by so quickly and then the kids are grown and gone. You can’t recapture those lost moments in time.
Have you ever seen a couple dining together in a restaurant? I say together but they are anything but together really. They have their cell phones out and are busy texting or playing online games. How about an hour of quality time with your spouse?
Now before we start thinking that’s not me I want you to think about this. Have you ever sat in a church service and instead of really listening you were mentally making your to-do list or remembering what needs to be done before the end of the weekend?
OK maybe I’m stepping on toes here. But the fact is we as a society have become so busy. Wouldn’t it be nice to simply sit and listen to a friend? How about going to a lake and simply sit. Notice the landscape, the ripple of the waves, the sounds of the birds.
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12
May I challenge you to turn off your cell phone, the TV and even the computer and spend a few hours with those you love?

What a powerful post, Debbie. I totally agree with you that we have become too busy. Let us take some time out with the ones we love. I do that on a regular basis and it does me good!!!
Great post.
