There is a Redeemer

He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight.
Long may he live;
may gold of Sheba be given to him!
May prayer be made for him continually,
and blessings invoked for him all the day!
Psalm 72: 13-15 (ESV)

I just watched “Schindler’s List”. The thought that keeps coming back to me is we find our redeemers in unexpected places, and they work in unexpected ways.

Who would have thought that a womanizing war profiteer would end up redeeming 1,100 Jews from the death?

But then again, who would have thought that a Jewish son of a carpenter from the backwater of Nazareth would be the redeemer of the world?

Why would that profiteer put his fortune and safety in danger to save those Jews from near certain death?

Then again, why would God become flesh, to be scorned, beaten and crucified, in order to offer salvation to all of earth?

Schindler was far from perfect, our Redeemer is perfect, the perfect Lamb of God.

The Jews on Schindler’s list – at first he didn’t know most of them. Most of them did nothing to deserve his mercy.

That’s the way it is with us – there is nothing that we can do to merit God’s grace. In our sin, in our shame, God reached down to us and offered up His son.

To us, who did nothing to deserve life, God offers us that life, through Christ.

It is when we most recognize our brokenness, our total inability span that great gulf between our own humanity and His perfection, that God reaches down to us, drawing us up.

Oskar Schindler put his fortune and his safety on the line in order to offer the Jews on his list life on this earth…yet there are those of us who are not even willing to risk embarrassment in order to share the gospel, offering eternal life.

There is no better day that today – right now – to take the offer of eternal life, or to share it with another. There is no better time than right now to take a moment and recognize our need for a Redeemer.

There is a redeemer,
Jesus, God’s own son,
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Holy one,

Jesus my redeemer,
Name above all names,
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Oh, for sinners slain.

Thank you oh my father,
For giving us your son,
And leaving your spirit,
til the work on earth is done.

When I stand in glory,
I will see his face,
And there I’ll serve my king forever,
In that holy place.

Thank you oh my father,
For giving us your son,
And leaving your spirit,
til the work on earth is done.

There is a redeemer,
Jesus, God’s own son,
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Holy one,

Thank you oh my father,
For giving us your son,
And leaving your spirit,
til the work on earth is done.

And leaving your spirit,
till the work on earth is done. – KEITH GREEN

Ah, a challenging post! I love it. I went to Israel a couple of years ago. Outside the Holocaust museum, there is a garden with memorials to the few people who offered real help to the Jewish people during that time. Shindler is there. To this day the Israeli government has people working to research and find the identities of people who stood up to help the Jewish people at that time; they are so thankful and want to honor them. May I never cease to be thankful and look for ways to honor my Helper.
