Are You Thirsty?
Are you thirsty? Have you ever had an unquenchable thirst?
Your throat becomes so dry and you can’t seem to drink enough water to satisfy that thirst.
Living in the desert of Phoenix, I’m familiar with this kind of thirst.
I’ve gone for long hikes in the mountains. Even though I always carry my water bottle with me I still return home thirsty.
Since I began working at a private school, one of my daily duties includes assisting with gate duty at the end of the school day. This involves matching up each child with the proper ride home from school. At this time of year it’s still very hot. Phoenix has a dry heat but I can tell you that after only one hour I’m so hot and …very thirsty.
It takes me quite a while to rehydrate myself and recover from the heat. As I drink my bottled water, it often feels like I can never get enough. Have you ever felt that way?
It reminds me of this verse from the book of John. Jesus was speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well. He told her about living water and she asked where she could get this.
John 4:13-14 (NIV)
“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
This woman came to the well to draw water. But she ended up with so much more.
John 4:15 (NIV)
“The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
The Samaritan woman met Jesus and her life would never be the same. Verse 39 says that many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of this woman’s testimony.
What about you? If you’re a believer, you have the Holy Spirit within you. He is the living water.
And yet how often do we quench that Spirit and live our lives in our own strength?
I know that as I’ve been going through a difficult season in my life, I’m learning to rely on the Lord more and more. Only He can truly provide what I need. Only He can quench my thirst.
Are you going through a dry season? Are you thirsty for more of God? Spend time in His Word. Ask Him to help you to surrender control of your life and allow Him to work in you and through you?
May we never thirst again but instead go to the One Source who can totally satisfy us.

Amen Debbie! Since we both live in the same city, I so know what you are talking about. Some days it seems that there is not enough water to quench the thirst.
It is so true about His Word being a great source of refreshment. I too rely on Him these days more and more; the source of strength and peace.

I love water because it is so healing. The more I drink the more I seem to want. So I know how you feel about wanting more and more of Jesus!
I’m getting ready to teach a Bible study on Psalm 1, and one of the verses says, we are like a tree planted next to the water. I love how under the New Covenant, we aren’t planted next to the water, the water is in us!
